NDA, Purdue University Press publish groundbreaking demolition textbook

The National Demolition Association and Purdue University Press jointly announce the publication of the nation's first university textbook on the subject of the demolition process, entitled Demolition: Practices, Technology, and Management. Co-authored by demolition veteran Richard J. Diven and Purdue University assistant professor Mark Shaurette, Ph.D., it serves as a repository of basic demolition knowledge, best practices and standards and is the first such textbook of its kind in the U.S. and possibly the world, according to the NDA. Saudi Arabia to spend $ 40 billion on smart constructions

Saudi Arabia is expected to spend an estimated $40 billion on the construction of smart buildings during the next eight years, the Saudi Gazette reports. An increasing trend is being witnessed in the Kingdom's real estate sector for the construction of smart buildings. This trend would help save 30 percent on energy consumption, reduce 50 percent of dioxide emissions and cut down 50 percent on water consumption, according to studies. More

Construction & Demolition Recycling magazine will be hosting the C&D Recycling Forum, co-sponsored by the National Demolition Association, on Oct. 3-5, at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore, Md. In the opening session on Oct. 4, Bob Brickner of GBB Inc. will offer a history of the C&D recycling industry. In "Recycling vs. Disposal-Changes and Choices," Brickner will review the history of how mixed construction and demolition materials have been managed in the past 20 years, including the steady development of recycling options. He'll be joined by industry veteran Burwin Reed of Potomac Landfill in Virginia and by a demolition contractor who has played a part in the sector's development. Other program topics include: considerations for entering the business, investment recovery and salvage, on-site crushing, the potential of energy markets, maximizing metals recovery and health and safety aspects of the industry. The Federal Highway Administration chose Malvern's bridge on the Ouachita River as one of 10 projects to honor this year. Scotland sustainable recycling plant to tackle landfill reliance

Scottish environmental specialist IKM Consulting has joined forces with waste management giant Shanks to work on a state-of-the-art recycling facility in Glasgow, U.K. The plant is set to open this year alongside the existing recycling works at Blochairn, and its backers say it will play a central role in reducing the nation's reliance on landfill. New cranes and derricks rule published in Federal Register

OSHA's new rule addressing the use of cranes and derricks in construction was published in the Federal Register Aug. 9. The rule, which replaces a decades-old version based on outdated standards, will take effect Nov. 8. It addresses critically important provisions for crane operation and incorporates technological advances that will provide improved protection for about 4.8 million workers employed by 267,000 construction, crane rental and crane certification establishments.

While Adam and Kim Weitsman, owners of Upstate Shredding LLC, Owego, N.Y., learned that the historic, The Krebs restaurant in Skaneateles, N.Y., was for sale, it sparked an idea designed to preserve the more than 100-year-old restaurant and provide a way to generate significant donations each year for Onondaga County charities focusing on children and hunger. Environmental Excellence Award and Purdue Internship Programs

Information about two new NDA initiatives, the Association's Environmental Excellence Awards and its Purdue Student Internship Program have been forwarded to our members. The Environmental Excellence Award program is designed to highlight the environmental stewardship successes that all NDA members have accomplished whether they involve a complex asbestos abatement or soil remediation, a Brownfields site, superfund cleanup or a project that improves the look of a community. They can also include a product or service provided by an Associate member that benefits the environment or community enhancement. The Purdue Internship Program provides $12,000 in funding from the Board of Directors' Education Committee to fund three Purdue students with internships in the summer of 2011. Managed by the University's Demolition sub-major at Purdue, students will be placed with interested NDA member firms to gain broad exposure to the demolition process as part of their mandatory industry work experience requirement. Buffalo warehouse purchased to be demolished

Buffalo, N.Y., real estate development company has purchased an empty warehouse and its three-acre site in that city order to demolish the structure, according to a report on the BuffaloRising website. Larkin Development Group has purchased a warehouse building one block away from a nearby building it has been renovating. The newly-purchased building, bought for $180,000, will not be renovated, but instead Larkin will demolish it to prepare the land for future development, according to BuffaloRising. More

Armoury clears the way for new Birmingham, UK, library

The Big City Plan will see a $300 million new high specification Library of Birmingham constructed by main contractor Carillion in Centenary Square in Birmingham, U.K., that will integrate new library facilities with the nearby Repertory Theatre. Carillion has brought in demolition contractor Armoury Group to carry out the initial enabling works as well as a two-stage demolition program for surrounding buildings to create the space for the new build.
