Free Webinar — PCBs in Caulk
Nov. 13
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. EST

PCB's in Caulking has come to the national forefront for owners, managers, contractors and consultants. For years, this environmental dimension was rarely discussed and/or addressed as an environmental concern for parties that have some level of liability to identify, maintain, demolish, remediate and/or dispose of regulated caulking products.

In an effort to identify the regulatory requirements, assessment, monitoring and accountability methodologies, along with the liabilities for all of the parties that may be involved in a project, the NDA has convened a panel of experts that will: provide an overview of the PCB in Caulking Rule, discuss assessment procedures and work plan development, and identify some of the legal responsibilities and exposures that exist for all parties involved in projects where PCB's are encountered.

Brainerd demolition postponed, early work reveals vandalism
Libertyville Review
The demolition of Libertyville High School's Brainerd Building in Illinois was set for Nov. 3, but school officials are postponing it until Nov. 17 to finish all preliminary work. Utility lines are still being disconnected and removed because the nonprofit that hoped to save the building kept everything working up until a referendum to preserve the building failed in April. Other pre-demolition requirements mandated by the state are also being tended to, according to officials at School District 128. One hefty requirement, as reported last month, is the removal of all asbestos.

Demolition for massive eyesore put on hold
Each day Rachel Cooper stares at a massive eyesore that sits in the middle of her neighborhood on the 700 block of South Randolph Street in Indianapolis. What she sees was once a two-story church that contractors transformed into a house that has now been left abandoned. Over the years there were hopes someone would move in, but that quickly diminished when vandals targeted the building. They stripped it, leaving the building tattered and shattered. Because of the building’s gradual decay it was placed on the city’s demolition list.

Change the behavior of your negative, underperforming technicians
By Roger Daviston
The boss almost gave up on one of our plumbers, Mike. His average invoice was terrible at $400. He made excuses and blamed his circumstances. He was negative, and his attitude was that "life sucks." Mike thought nothing could change for him, and we were ready to let him go. However, one day while doing a ride-along with Mike, I recommended that he listen to "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale, a renowned motivational speaker. Mike listened and began to make changes, too. I was shocked and amazed to see his transformation.

Demountable steel structures: The future of the construction industry
Architecture & Design
The future of the construction industry could be changed completely if the concept of demountability is driven at larger scale structures, says University of New South Wales School of Civil and Environmental Engineering professor, Brian Uy. And the material to lead that change would be steel. Demountable structures are those which can be easily disassembled at the end of a building's life, with traditional structures limited to short-term use such as travelling shows, carnival structures and school classrooms. However, Professor Uy argues that large scale demountable buildings with longer lifespans is a feasible proposition — one that would take the steel used in existing buildings for new projects, thereby avoiding the need to smelt new steel.
