17th Annual Demolition Academy to be held in San Antonio
The NDA's 17th Annual Demolition Academy, our safety and management training education program, has been scheduled for March 9-10 at the Grand Hyatt on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. The academy takes place right before the NDA's 39th Annual Convention. The goal is to provide exceptional educational opportunities at the association's largest member service, its annual convention.
Course offerings include the NDA's demolition-specific OSHA 10-hour health and safety training course that attendees will receive an OSHA course completion card; Industrial Hygiene 101 that provides basic industrial hygiene information for the nonindustrial hygienist; Universal Waste Management that discusses the identification, handling, removal, packaging and safe disposal of universal wastes on demolition project sites; and Demolition Project Site Management, which emphasizes demolition project site management. NDA changes exhibitor contract for San Antonio
The NDA's 39th Annual Convention scheduled for March 11–14 at the Gonzalez Convention Center on the Riverwalk in San Antonio will be the first time that NDA has held an annual convention in Texas and the first time the association has utilized a convention center. Changes to the NDA's exhibitor contract involve enlarging the size of exhibit booth size from 8 x 10 to the "industry standard" 10 x 10 size. This will mean an increase in exhibitor space for those companies in the NDA's equipment area as well as its standard booth area. Fees for exhibiting at the NDA's 39th Annual Convention have increased slightly, for the first time in a number of years, but the actual square footage price with the increase in booth-space size will go down from prior conventions. NDA Links & Logos Program
More and more NDA member companies are participating in the NDA's Links & Logos Program, greatly increasing the Search Engine Optimization of both the NDA website and the sites of member companies as well. The NDA is asking each member to post the NDA logo on their websites. The logo will link back to the NDA website. In turn, the NDA will post each member's logo in the NDA online directory with a backlink to the company site. Convention Committee prepares for 2012 show in San Antonio
The Convention Committee of the NDA is completing work on the program for the association's 39th Annual Convention at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, which is planned for March 11–14. This year's show will feature a real Texas rodeo at the Monday Night Theme Party, which will include a PBR bull riding, two country western bands, line dancing, armadillo racing and a mechanical bull to ride. A Texas barbeque will be served. Next year's NDA golf tournament will be held March 11 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort outside San Antonio. A number of skill test events will be held in the Gonzalez Convention Center attached to the Hyatt Regency on March 12 in the NDA's exhibit hall. Apply for the NDA's Environmental Excellence Award
Applications for the NDA's second Environmental Excellence Award program were mailed recently to every member of the association. This program, designed to highlight the demolition industry's skill and experience in dealing with challenging environmental issues of their project sites or products developed that protect the environment, had 11 winners in 2011. The program was developed by the association's Environment Committee to promote the NDA's commitment to environmental stewardship as part of its mission. Awards will be presented to this year's winners at the NDA's Annual Meeting on March 13 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention center in San Antonio.

39th Annual Delegate Registration in next issue of Demolition
The Delegate Registration form for the NDA's 39th Annual Convention, March 10-13 at the grand Hyatt on the Riverwalk and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, is in the November/December issue of Demolition magazine. It is important to remember that the association has established an early bird registration fee for next year's annual convention. If you register before Jan. 13 you will save $50 for each registrant. After Jan. 13, the registration fee for all delegates goes up to $700. House passes EPA Regulatory Relief Act

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2250, also known as the EPA Regulatory Relief Act on Oct. 13, 2011. The passing of this bill is considered an important victory for the construction and demolition recycling industry, especially those who send their wood to boilers. Contractors squeezed by construction material prices
Nonresidential building contractors are being caught in a price squeeze. The amounts these contractors pay for a range of key construction materials dropped -0.6 percent in October but have climbed 6.9 percent year-to-year, according to an analysis of producer price index figures released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Fall protection rules tightened by OSHA

In response to the high number of deaths related to falls in residential construction, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration says it is requiring employers operating in the residential construction industry to use the same methods of fall protection that historically have been used in the commercial construction industry. While these safety methods — including guardrail systems, safety net systems or personal fall arrest systems — are likely to add costs to residential construction, experts say the investment will pay off for contractors through lower workers' compensation insurance premiums and prevention of a job shutdown or delay should a fatality occur. OSHA has released 12 educational videos about potential hazards in the construction industry. The educational videos are presented in short segments and are geared for employers and workers. UK engineering project gains international recognition
A company based in Birmingham, U.K., has won a prestigious international award for its work on the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station. Demolition specialists Coleman & Company beat off competition from the U.K., U.S., Germany and Latin America to land the Contract of the Year award at the World Demolition Summit in the Netherlands city of Amsterdam. US Air Force wages war against waste
On Nov. 15, the Air Force joined the rest of the nation in observing America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home, at work and on the go. Any action that helps divert waste from landfills supports the Department of Defense strategic sustainability performance plan goal of diverting 50 percent of nonhazardous solid waste and 60 percent of construction and demolition waste by 2015 and beyond, officials added. Report details economic impact of stalled architecture projects
A new report from the American Institute of Architects outlines how delaying building projects is affecting the economy, as well as progress in eco-friendly construction. The report, "Stalled Construction Projects and Financing Problems: An Agenda to Keep Construction of America's Buildings and Infrastructure Going," points out that in the last three years, construction spending in the U.S. has declined by nearly $300 billion. This loss, the report states, accounts for a 2 percent decline in the overall size of the American economy. More
