NDA returns to Opryland

The NDA will be returning to the site of one of its most successful conventions, Gaylord's Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tenn., for its 42nd Annual Convention, March 21-25, 2015. One of the nation's premier convention destination Gaylord's Opryland has over 3,100 rooms, a massive glass-enclosed atrium with shops and restaurants, and a terrific convention center for the world's largest exhibition of demolition products, equipments and services. The NDA plans to utilize Gaylord's steamboat, the General Jackson, for its Opening Night Celebration on March 22, 2015. There will also be a major country music concert in Opryland's Presidential Ballroom on March 23. The association's 28th Annual Golf Tournament will be onsite at Opryland's Gaylord Springs course March 21, 2015. Gaylord's Ryman Convention hall will be open March 22-24 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. to allow the NDA's Associate members to showcase their products and services to the demolition industry. More

National Demolition Association presented college scholarships to six deserving students at the 39th Annual National Demolition Association Convention in Las Vegas. The NDA has recognized exemplary students with scholarships for more than 10 years. "We're pleased to present these scholarships to students who have demonstrated a commitment to serve the local community while maintaining a high level of academic achievement," said Michael R. OSHA official: Confined space rule for construction is near completion

UK skyline changes after iconic flats demolished

Part of the iconic Red Road flats complex in Glasgow, U.K., has been blown down in a controlled explosion. Built in the mid-1960s to tackle the city's housing crisis, the flats once provided accommodation for almost 5,000 people. Initially they were regarded as the answer to Glasgow's housing problem but in recent years have become rundown and vandalised, and stand largely empty. More

Demolition work continues on bridge in Florida

At a hectic series of central Florida interchanges, SR 417 and SR 408 there was little time available for demolishing the old bridges and then reconstructing new ones in their place. As a result, the new bridges needed were constructed and then when traffic was up and running the demolition of the older structures took place. In the four bridges being demolished there was 2.1 million pounds of steel to be dismantled and processed through recycling. More

An estate management director from the U.K. has been fined after failing to manage the spread of asbestos during the demolition of a building. The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Brian Marshall, 44, managing director of Supply on Demand Ltd., for breaching asbestos safety regulations. More

Group says 114 NY Brownfields improved, $1 billion spent

An environmental group says the state has paid out $1 billion in tax credits to developers in cleaning up and redeveloping 114 Brownfield sites across New York over the past decade. Environmental Advocates of New York says its review of state tax and cleanup records for the Brownfields program show those tax credits went toward redevelopment of 68 sites, largely from incentives based on the value of construction, not cleanup costs. Turkey tops the list of US scrap metal consumers

As China's once voracious appetite for scrap metal has moderated, Turkey's has sharply increased. As a result, the country of 74 million has become the world's largest consumer of scrap metal from U.S. recyclers. According to a report by American Metal Markets, Turkey's consumption of more than 5.6 million tons of U.S. ferrous scrap during 2011 was up 29.2 percent from less than 4.4 million tons in 2010. Vermont governor signs recycling bill into Law

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin has signed into law H. 485, an Act Relating to Establishing Universal Recycling of Solid Waste. In a statement following the signing, Shumlin said, "I am pleased to sign this bill today. Moving toward universal recycling will advance Vermont into the next generation of solid waste management and keep more waste out of our landfills." More
