NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Education Committee of the board of directors of the NDA is sending an important survey to every Regular Member of the association concerning its proposed Education Initiative. The survey, being conducted by Association Headquarters, Inc. of Mt. Laurel, N.J., will solicit information concerning the courses and programs that the Education Committee should consider offering as part of this comprehensive initiative. The survey will be sent to every Regular Member via U.S. Mail with a stamped self-addressed return envelop and electronically via email.

The results of the survey will be reported to the NDA's board of directors at its upcoming Fall Board Meeting in New York City on Sept. 29. In order to develop the programs and delivery systems that suit the needs of the demolition industry, the board and its Education Committee needs to get as much information as possible from its major market, its Regular Members. The survey results will guide the board as it develops a major new member service to help its members train their workforce and grow their companies.

As an added incentive and to express its thanks for responding to the survey each responding firm will automatically be entered to win a $500 American Express Gift Card (two winners will be drawn); and an iPad2 (one winner will be drawn; or, the grand prize: FREE DELEGATE REGISTRATION to the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention in San Diego, March 23–26, 2013, a $700 value!

The board of directors needs its Regular Members to provide it with input about how its Education Initiative should proceed. Please respond to the survey from Association Headquarters by Aug. 31.

NDA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Applications for the NDA's 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards will be mailed out to every association member early in July. This program, designed to promote the demolition industry's commitment to environmental stewardship as outlined in the organization's mission, has been very successful with both members and their clients. These awards are presented to NDA members that perform projects that have a significant impact on the quality of life in the community where they did the work or developed a product or service that does the same.

This year's awards will be presented by Environment Committee Chairman Chris Godek of New England Yankee Construction of Milford, Conn., March 25, immediately following President Don Rachel's welcoming address at the NDA's 40th Anniversary Convention at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego. Award winners receive two awards, one for their own firm and one to present to the client they did the work for. The NDA's Environment Committee established this program to enlighten our customers, the construction community and the general public to the major role the industry plays in enhancing the quality of life in the towns and cities where we work. Look for the 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards application forms soon. The applications will also be available online on NDA's website.

Tracking blight in America's hardest-hit cities
The Atlantic Cities    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Empty, ugly, problematic homes are a persistent pest for cities. Marring the landscape and seemingly spreading like an infestation, these blighted properties feed into a cycle of decline that can be hard to escape from. And for some cities, the problem is indeed getting worse. According to a new report out from the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center, the Michigan cities of Flint and Detroit have the highest rates of blight in the country. More

Illegal scrap yards in California a burgeoning problem
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Earlier this summer, thieves in Pico Rivera, Calif., made off with a 200-pound brass bell from a Catholic church. Burglars around California have torn up train tracks, carted off bleachers, nabbed park statues and helped themselves to copper wiring serving neighborhoods, hospitals and airports. The state is in the throes of a metal theft epidemic, fueled by scrap yards' willingness to pay high prices for copper and steel that can be resold to hungry factories in Asia. More

Contractors: Michigan building might require a floor-by-floor approach
Michigan Live    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Demolition of Genesee Towers in downtown Flint, Mich., could occur in several ways, but probably not with a dramatic implosion, local contractors say. The fate of the tallest building in downtown was recently revealed when former Emergency Manager Michael Brown signed a deal with Uptown Investment Corporation earlier in August before leaving office, transferring the property for $1 under the conditions it is torn down and replaced with an urban plaza. Construction confidence wanes as nation approaches fiscal cliff
The American Surveyor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Associated Builders and Contractors released its newest construction industry economic measure, the Construction Confidence Index. The CCI is a diffusion index that reflects three aspects of the U.S. nonresidential construction industry — sales prospects, staffing levels and profit. During the second quarter of 2012, all three indices declined, undoing much of the first quarter's progress and indicating that nonresidential construction momentum is waning. However, index values remain above 50, indicating that construction spending is still poised to expand, just at a slower pace. More

The Petersburg mission is the first for what is called "Operation Renew," and it falls under the Virginia National Guard's Counterdrug Task Force. More

Origin of toxic 'green salt' in Kentucky DOE building a mystery
The Washington Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two years ago this summer, crews working at the sprawling Department of Energy campus in Kentucky noticed high levels of radioactive "green salt" in one of the buildings. Initially thought to have been an accident, the incident became the focus of a nearly yearlong investigation suggesting that someone at the Energy Department's Portsmouth Paducah Project Office had intentionally placed the toxic substance in an air monitor. Construction materials prices post rare year-over-year drop in July
Construction Equipment Guide    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The cost of key construction materials dropped for the third consecutive month in July, pushing down year-over-year prices for the first time since 2009, according to an analysis of producer price index figures released Aug. 14 by the Associated General Contractors of America. However, association officials warned that recent spikes in diesel fuel and steel prices may drive up the cost of construction again, and they urged lawmakers to invest in needed infrastructure projects promptly while prices remain low.
