Californian trans fat ban takes effect
FoodNavigator-USA.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
California has become the first state to ban the use of trans fat-containing cooking oils, as a law signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2008 came into effect on Jan. 1. Evidence has mounted over the past decade showing that trans fats clog arteries and cause heart disease. On the back of growing concern, the Food and Drug Administration issued a regulation which was implemented in 2006 requiring manufacturers to list trans fatty acids on the nutrition panel of foods, providing further motivation for manufacturers to cut trans fats from their products.  More

Review supports omega-3 for liver health
NutraIngredients-USA.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Increased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources may benefit people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, says a new review of the literature. A review of four human studies found that the fatty acids could improve liver health and function, and increase insulin sensitivity in people suffering from fatty liver, a condition that is usually symptomless but said to increase the risk for liver inflammation, and ultimately results in liver failure. Setting the record straight on weight loss
EurekAlert!    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's time to set the record straight. The only reliable way to lose weight is to eat less or exercise more. Preferably both. So why bother to state the obvious? Obesity rise hurts health more than smoking
WebMD    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
America's obesity epidemic now poses an equal or greater threat to health-related quality of life than smoking, according to a new study. Researchers say that as obesity in America has risen dramatically in recent years — and smoking rates have declined — the contribution of obesity to the burden of disease and shortening of life has increased while smoking's role has decreased. The study showed that from 1993 to 2008, the proportion of smokers among U.S. adults declined by 18.5 percent while the proportion of obese adults increased 85 percent. More
