Multivitamins in Pregnancy Ward Off Low Birth Weight

Multivitamin supplementation during pregnancy may improve a baby's birth weight more than iron-folic acid supplementation alone, a meta-analysis showed. In an analysis of 13 studies, women who received a multivitamin had a 17 percent greater reduction in the risk of having a baby with low birth weight, Prakesh Shah, M.D., of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and colleagues reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. In the study, researchers put 92 healthy men and women aged 22 to 45 through an 11-day, controlled sleep-restriction experiment in a laboratory.
