Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts of Eugene, Ore., is recalling 6,712.5 pounds of raw and dry roasted hazelnut kernels sold in stores from Nov. 2 through Dec. 4. No illnesses have been reported. The hazelnut kernels were distributed in retail and wholesale stores, restaurants and bakeries in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Oklahoma and New Jersey. The recall has been announced because the products may be contaminated with salmonella. More

Controlling for genetic factors by investigating a number of twin pairs helped researchers in Ohio tease out the effects of a number of lifestyle factors on skin aging. The study, published in a recent issue of the Archives of Dermatology, involved 65 twin pairs, ten of which were monozygotic twins (genetically identical). According to the study, led by Kathryn J. Martires at the Western Reserve School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio, when controlling for genetic factors, a number of environmental features affecting skin appearance become apparent. The carcinogen aristolochic acid, which was found in many prescribed Chinese herbal products including Guan Mu Tong, is associated with an increased risk of urinary tract cancer, according to a new study published online December 21 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Many countries, such as Taiwan, have banned products containing aristolochic acid, because of clinical cases of urothelial cancer in association with aristolochic acid use. However, no such associations, to the authors' knowledge, have been documented in herbal products containing aristolochic acid. A study published in the journal Clinical and Vaccine Immunology investigated whether Korean red ginseng (KRG) could have beneficial effects in HIV-1-infected patients administered highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The scientists analyzed the CD4 T-cell count, viral load and resistance mutations in 46 patients. Twenty-three patients were treated with HAART plus KRG and the other twenty-three patients were treated with HAART alone. The combination group experienced a significant increase in CD4 T-cell count in comparison to the group treated with HAART alone. More
