NPA Chief Scientist comments on research associating
dietary supplements with increased cancer risk

Natural Products Association
NPA Senior Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Corey Hilmas, M.D., Ph.D., former Chief of the Dietary Supplement Regulation Implementation Branch within the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), comments on research that claims to link dietary supplement intake with an increased risk of cancer: "Just as the name implies, dietary supplements are designed to 'supplement' the diet because consumers do not eat enough of the critical phytochemicals and constituents found in fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods, including fish, on a daily basis. Dietary supplements should be taken as part of a healthy lifestyle and after consulting with one's health care provider."

Tell Congress to oppose dietary supplement labeling act once it is reintroduced
Natural Products Association
Given the current amount of negative media scrutiny regarding the dietary supplement industry, the Natural Products Association (NPA) anticipates that Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., will soon reintroduce the Dietary Supplement Labeling Act. NPA firmly believes that this new legislation will create redundant regulations for the industry, as well as include provisions that will make getting your quality products to consumers more difficult. NPA supports the federal government’s efforts to rid the market of unlawful products, but strongly believes that this legislation would impose overly burdensome regulations on the legitimate dietary supplement industry. The Food and Drug Administration has said repeatedly it does have all the tools it needs to fully regulate. The scrutiny surrounding the dietary supplement industry shows no signs of letting up. That is why it's imperative that you reach out to your lawmakers as soon as possible to get in front of any adversarial legislation from Sen. Durbin. Please join us in urging Congress to oppose this potential legislation, and protect your ability to do business. Take action now and contact your lawmaker today.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines a dietary ingredient as a vitamin; mineral; herb or other botanical; amino acid; dietary substance for use by man to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake; or a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, extract or combination of the preceding substances. BMPEA is none of these, rendering misbranded any products that declare BMPEA as a dietary supplement.

Homeopathic treatments could receive greater scrutiny from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the near future, as their growing popularity has led some critics to call for tighter regulation.
