Unlike the safety evaluations that new drugs have to go through, the safety of genetically engineered food is unclear. The issue of GMO food safety was first addressed at a meeting between the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization in 1990. The adoption of the substantial equivalence concept in 1996 allowed permission to sell new foods without any safety or toxicology tests, as long as the chemical ingredients were not substantially different from foods already on the market. Illinois court to oversee dozens of lawsuits related to alleged herbal supplements fraud

Dozens of putative class-action lawsuits have been consolidated before a federal judge in Illinois in connection with a dietary supplement investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. John Darrah, a federal judge in Chicago with the Northern District of Illinois, is overseeing 35 cases that were filed across the country against Walgreen Co., Walmart Stores, Inc., GNC Holdings, Inc. and Target Corp.
