UPS Awarded $470K for Cleaner Diesel Engines

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded more than $470,000
to UPS to replace old diesel engines and generators in order to reduce
particulate matter emissions at its Worldport air hub. The funds are
being distributed to UPS through the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition,
which is receiving the money from the EPA's National Clean Diesel
Campaign. The money will fund two projects at the Worldport air hub,
located at Louisville International Airport. More
Green Roof a Part of Airport Wish List

Port Columbus' leaky roof creates a green possibility. Airport
officials are asking for a $1.5 million green roof in its place. It's
one project among several that they hope will qualify for President
Barack Obama's economic-stimulus package. Green roofs use landscape
plantings atop water-resistant membranes to deflect heat, absorb noise,
reduce storm-water runoff and extend the life of the roof. More

Environmental Assessment for Ann Arbor Airport Plan Granted

The City Council has OK'd the next step toward a planned runway
expansion designed to make landings safer at the Ann Arbor Airport.
That step, an environmental assessment, will include opportunities for
public comment on the changes. Now 3,500 feet long, five planes have
overshot the runway since 2000. The airport handles about 75,000
takeoffs and landings a year. More
General Dynamics Awarded “Green” Jet Engine Contract

The US Air Force awarded a unit of General Dynamics an $18.5 million
contract this month to develop a greener jet engine. The company says
the new engine will be designed and built with parts that do not
corrode, will not use or release hazardous materials and operates with
minimal environmental impact on air emissions and noise. More
Southwest Airlines Adopt-A-Pilot Program Takes Off

Airlines is kicking off its annual Adopt-A-Pilot program this month.
Ffth-grade students in more than 1,000 classes across the country will
"adopt" Southwest Airlines Pilots in this educational mentorship
program. In order to teach students the importance of "Going Green,"
the Adopt-A-Pilot program has added environmental awareness to the
curriculum. The lesson focuses specifically on how Southwest Airlines
views energy usage and fuel consumption and ways the airline has worked
toward improving its aircraft to make them more eco-friendly. More
