Pawn stars: My adventures at pawnshops
Chick Talk Dallas Share
I've spent the last month deep in pawnshop heaven for my cover story in DFW magazine, writes blogger Joanna Cattanach. I've been to some shady joints–they had to buzz me in at one place in Arlington, Texas–to great spaces like Loan Star Pawn in Irving, Texas, where I met owner Vincent Santoscoy and spent an afternoon talking to customers and learning about the pawn business from the inside out. Pawn Stars is somewhat true. But according to the Keller, Texas-based National Pawnbrokers Association, the average pawn loan is about $80 and the majority of people who use pawnshops are employed. More

It's early afternoon at Loan Star Pawn in Irving, Texas, and a handful of regulars — customers, off-duty police officers — are gathered around a coffee table in the center of the room. Pictures of smiling patrons and friends are stuffed under the table's glass top. A few men are eyeing the nearby jewelry cases and a gun rack on the back wall. A mean-looking semi-automatic .22-caliber rifle is
going for $559. One of the men looks interested but doesn't bite. The longer it sits on the shelf, the lower the price will drop.

Database helps track stolen goods
The Columbus Dispatch

Sorting through a backlog of pawnshop receipts in January, Reynoldsburg Police detective Michael Binder in Ohio came across a slip for a global-positioning satellite unit. He checked the device against crime reports because auto electronics are popular for theft and resale. Bingo, this one matched a break-in. Binder contacted the pawnbroker, but the
GPS unit had been sold by the time Binder had seen the receipt, and the lead evaporated.

The D.C. Council is pushing to tighten regulation of pawnshops in the city and give residents a stronger voice in where they open, after a lengthy battle over plans to put a pawnshop in a Northwest Washington neighborhood. Pawnshop oversight legislation sponsored by council member
Muriel Bowser won unanimous approval as an emergency measure; the council is expected to discuss a permanent measure next month. The action follows a nearly three-month effort by some residents and business owners to stop Famous Pawn from moving into a vacant real estate.

Gold fell from a one-week high in London as the dollar's advance may curb demand from
investors seeking an alternative investment. The dollar climbed against the euro after German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the Bild-am-Sonntag newspaper yesterday that Germany’s aid for Greece to help pay off debts can still be rejected. The metal priced in euros and Swiss francs climbed to records. Gold priced in dollars last year moved inversely to the U.S. currency.
