Fort Worth, Texas, council votes to allow pawnshops to stay open
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Share

The Fort Worth City Council in North Texas voted 7-2 to allow a group of pawnshops to keep operating indefinitely, ending an emotional debate about predatory lending practices and the impact of zoning on neighborhoods. The council had been considering rescinding a zoning ordinance that pushed pawnshops out of neighborhoods. But their decision late last night will have little immediate impact, since the affected shops were allowed to
keep operating as "grandfathered" businesses.

One of Mexico's largest micro-lenders could expand into pawnshops to reach more borrowers who cannot access traditional forms of credit, the company's chief executive officer said. Financiera Independencia typically offers unsecured loans as small as a few hundred dollars to borrowers who want to open or expand a business. Jerry Bearman bought the first of 45 jewelry stores at age 18, worked alongside famed "Jeweler to the Stars" Harry Winston and over six decades built a reputation on integrity.
Bearman's father was in the business, as is his son. And thanks to a mix of luck and skill, the jewelry industry did right by him, the retired Palm Springs, Calif., resident said. So when Bearman recently noticed a local gold dealer was making claims that seemed too good to be true, he raised a red flag. He took 36.6 ounces of 14-karat stamped jewelry into the store and was offered $520, or $14.21 per gram. That was about 25 percent less than advertised.

Armed, alert and not alone are rules for pawnshops
The Augusta Chronicle

On Matt Butler's right forearm, in black ink, are the words "Trust Nobody." It's a motto that testifies to the decade Butler has spent working in pawnshops in Augusta, Ga. He has another motto, too, about the three things necessary to run a safe operation: "surveillance systems, firearms and a sixth sense." On a recent afternoon, Butler and his co-workers sat inside Downtown Pawn and talked about staying
safe in an increasingly dangerous environment. Two weeks ago, pawnshop owner James Benny Tidwell was shot dead inside his store.

Vegas clientele entertains on 'Pawn Stars'
The Palm Beach Post

What I know about pawnshops is limited to Bon Jovi songs about six strings in hock and the scene in "Pulp Fiction" where Bruce Willis' character meets The Gimp, reporter Kelly
Rausch writes. In short, I don't have a real good feeling about pawnshops. When I heard of the History Channel's half-hour reality series "Pawn Stars," I assumed the show would capitalize on the potential seediness of its Las Vegas location.
