Pawnshops adjusting to economy, too The News Tribune Share The star of the 1964 movie, "The Pawnbroker," would likely not recognize a pawnshop 46 years later, where the price of gold has topped $1,200 per ounce, where a recession has depleted the number of buying customers and where, on the History Channel, a show called "Pawn Stars" has repainted the old gloom with a coat of glitz. "I think that was the stock Hollywood version of it that came from the movie
— it was the sort of a place where
unscrupulous people would come," said Emmett Murphy, spokesman for the National Pawnbrokers Association. Today, he said, pawnshops are "well-lit places. What we're seeing
— people think pawn is cool." And pawnbrokers, he said, "are micro-finance lenders."More

Big box pawnshop: Sell, buy or hock at new chain store The Capital Times via Madison.com Share Ryan Martin had never been in a pawnshop before so he wasn't sure what to expect when he entered the new Pawn America, carrying a Fender guitar amplifier to sell. But instead of walking into a dimly
lit store in a seedy part of town, dealing with a guy behind iron bars wearing a visor, Martin was inside the former Circuit City big box in Madison, Wis., talking to a young woman in a white sports shirt. Martin ended up getting $200 cash for the amp, a good price considering he bought it used a year ago for $300.More
