A family's heirloom, history are reclaimed
The Boston Globe Share
As soon as his boys could walk, Francis "Fuzzy" Hector took them on airplanes at Air Force bases. He wanted them to stand inside the belly of a transport and get that rumbling feeling in their own bellies. "Man," Derek Hector was saying, "my brother Chris and I, we went to air bases all over the place when we were kids." They called him Fuzzy because he was fast. "My dad ran track for Boston English," Derek Hector said, "and he could fly." Then
World War II broke out and Fuzzy Hector really did fly. He went to train in Alabama as one of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African-American warriors deemed good enough to be part of an elite Army Air Corps unit, but not good enough to be considered the equal of a white man. Fuzzy Hector was a gunner and a radio operator. More

Pawn X-Change owner Brad Shain fell into the pawnbrokering business quite accidentally. Shain decided to open up Pawn X-Change, which is now the largest privately-held pawn chain in the country with 40 stores in Washington and Arizona, including the one in Tacoma, Wash., when he was in Texas visiting
various companies to sell them microchips. "I saw pawn shops on every block," Shain said. "I thought 'What a great business model. They've cleaned it up and treat the customers well. We could do that in Seattle."

Gold declines in New York as higher equities, euro curb demand
Bloomberg BusinessWeek
Share

Gold declined in New York as rising equities and a rebounding euro curbed demand for the metal as an investment to protect wealth. European stocks climbed and the euro gained the most in two weeks. All
six main industrial metals on the London Metal Exchange advanced, while crude-oil futures rose in New York on speculation growth in the U.S. economy will boost demand. Gold reached a record $1,254.50 an ounce on June 8 and climbed seven of the previous eight weeks as investors sought the perceived safety of bullion amid Europe's sovereign-debt crisis.

To help catch thieves and track stolen merchandise, Onondaga County police agencies in New York want second-hand shops to be required to keep computer records of goods they buy. But a law Onondaga County legislators passed to accomplish that ran into a wall of opposition today from antique shop owners, coin dealers and others who packed a public hearing and complained the law would cripple their businesses. Some said they
don’t even own computers.

South Asia island farmers forced to pawn jewelry
Sunday Times
Share

Farmers in the Polonnaruwa district — in North Central Province, Sri Lanka in South Asia — are pawning gold jewelry and mortgaging farming equipment in a desperate bid to raise money for the next cultivation season. These farmers, who had anticipated high prices for their last harvest, were unable to sell more than 50 per cent of their stocks after failing to get the expected prices. They are in a bind, with no cash in
hand, with the next season due to commence in the next two months.

Philadelphia council bill seeks to slow flow of stolen gold, silver
The Philadelphia Inquirer
Share

Philadelphia City Council and dealers in precious metals reached a compromise on a bill to slow the flow of stolen gold and silver. Councilman Jack Kelly's bill would establish new regulations for pawnbrokers as well, requiring an electronic tracking system that police could use to track stolen items. Currently, pawnbrokers report their transactions by way of individual paper slips, and Philadelphia police sought changes in the law
that will greatly enhance their ability to trace stolen items and investigate burglaries.
