Pawnshop owner to seek relief from Des Moines, Iowa, moratorium
The Des Moines Register

The owner of a chain of pawn shops based in Minnesota will seek relief from a six month freeze on the businesses at tonight’s Des Moines City Council meeting in Iowa. In mid-May, the City Council
enacted a 180-day moratorium on new pawnshops and payday lenders amid growing concerns about their proliferation in Des Moines. City leaders are examining long-term zoning changes that could require separation distances between the businesses and cap interest rates for loans made by pawnshops. Language in the Iowa code appears to give municipalities the ability to regulate interest rates on loans given by pawnshops, city officials said.

A modern day gold rush
Bloomberg Businessweek via MSNBC

Fear of financial collapse has enhanced gold's glitter, with prices soaring more than 300 percent the past decade, including 30 percent just in the last 12 months. And just as strong U.S. real estate prices a few years ago created a burgeoning ecosystem of entrepreneurs exploiting that bubble, gold's surge has led to a new crop of prospectors seeking gold and the business around gold.

Great deals can be found in pawnshops during recession

The United States is slowly climbing out of its recession, and calling the consumer credit crunch tight may be the understatement of the past two years. Many Americans cannot get financing for much needed purchases like new cars or to pay their bills. American small businesses, the backbone of the country’s consumer driven economy, must turn to other sources of financing when banks cannot fill the need. Pawnbrokers and
pawnshops can fill that need and are still lending money to individuals and businesses during this economic crisis even when banks have long since stopped.

Road to 'Pawn'
New York Post

Rick Harrison, the unlikely star of this year's most unpredictable TV hit, "Pawn Stars," had to fight his way into the business that has now made him famous. Over the years, his family has tried its hand at everything from a sandwich shop to a string of payday-loan stores — waging battles with competitors and the city of Las Vegas all along the way, Las Vegas city records show. "Rick is certainly a very hard worker and a
visionary," said Las Vegas resident Ed Koch, a longtime customer of the Harrisons' Gold & Silver Pawn shop and a customer of their payday-loan store before that.
