'Pawn Stars' as the guilt-free 'Antiques Roadshow'
ExpressNightOut.com Share
I used to watch "Antiques Roadshow" and feel bad that I didn’t have a rare 1700s doodad in my attic, writes blogger Marc Silver. Now I watch "Pawn Stars" and feel great. At least I'm not standing in a Vegas pawnshop unloading an heirloom for fast cash. The History Channel hit draws 5 million viewers a week. It's easy to get hooked on the curios brought to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop: a pirate peg leg, a WWII infant gas mask, a

Glenn Beck's golden advertiser accused of 'rip off'
ABC News

An executive with Goldline, one of two gold companies
now under investigation for their sales practices, told ABC News that his company does not intentionally steer customers toward overpriced gold coins — but he also touted the coins as a safe harbor because "no one knows" whether the U.S. government will seize gold from private citizens. In an interview on Good Morning America, Goldline executive vice president Scott Carter responded to allegations that his company has made a fortune by persuading gold investors that collectible coins are
worth buying, despite a hefty mark-up. He said the firm, which weaves its sales pitches into broadcasts by popular conservative political personalities — including two former presidential candidates and Fox News host Glenn Beck — is simply offering its customers sound advice. "You should hold this three to five years," said Carter, "Preferably 10."

WHO-TV

A public forum on the future of pawnshops and payday lenders in Des Moines, Iowa, attracted a large audience to council chambers, most of which spoke out
against the businesses. "It's a defective loan product that traps people, everyday working people in a cycle of debt that they can barely escape from," said Matthew Covington of the group Concerned Citizens of Iowa. "It does not build wealth in our communities; it drains wealth from our communities."

Bridgend town centre has its first pawnbrokers' shop in at least 40 years, prompting mixed reactions from shoppers. The U.K.'s largest independent pawnbrokers, Ramsdens, have just opened in the Rhiw
Arcade, creating four jobs. The firm says it aims to fight the industry’s stereotypical associations with bankruptcy and shake off the reputation that people only visit pawnbrokers in desperation when the bailiffs are knocking on the door.
