When Richard Dan told his wife he was buying a first class section of an old TWA 747 including uniforms, china plates, walls, overhead bins and even a bathroom door she looked at him very strangely. Dan is not really a collector but owns a pawnshop in Wailuku, Maui called "Cash for Gold" and "Kamaaina Loan." The pieces of airline history belonged to a Maui resident who passed away. MORE

All three pawn shops in Bristol, Conn., are now closed after the Chief States Attorney's Office conducted an investigation of possible criminal activity involving pawnshops this spring. Bristol Police Chief John DiVenere reviewed the facts involved in the Chief States Attorney's Office investigations and "determined these activities unsuitable to the City of Bristol," according to a press release from the police department. Cash4Gold, one of the largest U.S. buyers of cast-off jewelry, is eyeing U.K. sales of 50 million pounds ($82.7 million) a year as precious metals prices soar and consumers fall on hard times. The private company, which launched in 2007 and is now one of the largest direct-response advertisers on American TV, is taking on the pawnbrokers in Britain by offering cash for cast-off precious metals via its Web site and ad campaign.
