Former pawnshop leaves legacy in downtown Dallas
The Daily Mustang via Pegasus News Share
It's 1940. Deep Ellum residents in downtown Dallas, along with visitors stroll down the sidewalk on a Saturday afternoon. Jazz music is heard from the nearby Gypsy Tea Room. The street stretching toward downtown is lined mostly with
pawnshops. One shop draws more attention than most. It's Honest Joe's, the best known pawn hop in Dallas. Today, the building is still in the family. More
Tracing guns requires team effort

Guns come in many different shapes, sizes and speeds. There is probably a type that fits, no matter what one desires. Todd Fabre owns Superior Pawn in Baton Rouge, La. He said military-style semi-automatic rifles are a hot item, especially
during hunting season. According to Fabre, for some of them, a clip holding up to 50 rounds can be used. It's his job to make sure those potentially deadly weapons do not get into the wrong hands. He said he probably sees 25 requests that are denied each year. Fabre is the middle man between the law and the purchaser.

Pawnshops
savor gold price surge
KOCO

Record gold prices of more than $1,100 an ounce are causing a boom at pawnshops. While customers can get more money than ever for gold items, trading it in won't necessarily translate into a huge payday. "I think it is a good time to sell if it's something that doesn't mean anything to you," said Best Buy Pawn Shop owner Steve Evans of Oklahoma City.
"It is going to bring a premium price right now."

Burnsville, Minn., considers retooling pawn
The Pioneer Press
Share

Pawn America CEO Brad Rixmann is on a
mission to loosen restrictions and fees on pawn transactions, and he's starting in Burnsville, Minn. After Rixmann lobbied Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, the city council is reconsidering its ordinance surrounding pawnshops and other resellers. Kautz and Rixmann say it is unfair that pawnshops pay a $2.50-per-transaction fee while other resellers pay no fees. "Why do they focus so much attention on people who come into pawn stores?" Rixmann asked in an interview. "What is it with pawn? Because somebody
made a movie — "Pulp Fiction"? ... It's not the real business."

New Jersey law limiting handgun purchases unfair to retailers, says task force chief
The Star-Ledger

A New Jersey gun law needs exceptions for various groups — including retailers who will only be able to buy one handgun a month from suppliers — members of a task force reviewing the legislation said recently. The law, intended to restrict the flow of
weapons to criminals, has riled gun advocates who say it penalizes law-abiding citizens like target shooters and collectors.

Fed officials see choppy recovery for U.S. economy
Reuters via ABC News

High unemployment and reluctant
consumers will likely make an incipient U.S. economic recovery weak and erratic, top Federal Reserve officials said in a recent string of speeches across the country. That means interest rates, currently at historic lows close to zero, should remain near that floor for the foreseeable future, the policymakers said.

R.I.P. Payday
Loans?
NPR
Share

Payday loans, also known as payday cash advances, remain a hugely controversial and profitable business. In recent years, several states have imposed strict usury limits on the interest pay day loan companies take, some as high as 400 percent on an annual basis. People who resort to payday lending are typically low-income workers with few assets, and the loans often have the
effect of depleting the assets of low-income communities.
