Pawnshop owner Michael Sattinger can spot the type. Sometimes a rough-hewn, burly guy will step into his shop with a posh engagement ring. Or maybe a twitchy, rail-thin teen will approach him with a car stereo. Sattinger sends them away, because if he buys a stolen item from a
customer and the police confiscate it as evidence, he knows he'll lose whatever he paid for it.

With the price of gold at an all-time high, people turn to their jewelry. It's a modern-day gold rush — in reverse. Across the Western Slope more people are counting on pawnshops to make ends meet. Grand Junction, Colo., pawnshops say people often
come in looking for a 100 to a couple thousand dollar loan. "Yeah we do here the stories behind the loan...there doesn't seem to be any one thing that takes precedence over the other. They just need the cash. They can't get a loan at a bank. This is considered a poor man's bank," said, Larry Bruner, the manager of Big J Jewelry and Loan. "Jewelry, guns, and instruments are all common items pawned. Pawnshops say it doesn't matter the price. People are just looking for money."

Well, my impression has completely changed after watching a few episodes of the History Channel's Pawn Stars and talking with one its stars, Rick Harrison.

Tom Lydon, head of Global Trends Investments, says a weaker dollar will make commodities prices cheaper for foreign buyers using stronger currencies and that demand will increase from companies
overseas.

Thomas Streett patiently waited in a cubicle at Smyth Jewelers in Timonium on a recent Saturday as a sales associate examined two gold rings and a gold pocket watch he brought in for sale. The verdict: The high school ring he bought in 1955 for $17 fetched
$186. The wedding band from a marriage that ended more than 40 years ago was worth about $65. His grandfather's watch was merely gold-filled, and Smyth wasn't interested. But Streett was pleased.
