Pawnshops are going upscale for affluent clients

Pawnbrokering might be associated more with dingy storefronts cluttered with junk and customers desperate to scrape up enough cash for groceries or rent. But the recession, credit crunch and slow economic recovery have hit Americans up and down the socio-economic ladder, and that has created an opportunity to serve a more high-end clientele for firms. "We're seeing an increase in these kind of stores in Beverly Hills and other affluent neighborhoods," said Emmett Murphy, a spokesman for the National Pawnbrokers Association. "People in all walks of life are in need of short-term credit." More

The National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) is pleased to announce the recipients of this years Future Business Leaders Scholarships. Six students were selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship. Dana Meinecke, executive director of the National Pawnbrokers Association continues to emphasize the importance of giving back to you communities. "The Future Business Leaders Scholarship has awarded $106,000 since it's inception in 2003," Meinecke said. "The NPA motto reads, 'Although the children in our country represent less than 25 percent of the population, they are 100 percent of the future!' " More

Georgia pawnshop makes plans for Marietta

Cruchelow Jewelry and Loan, the pawnshop forced out of a Kennesaw, Ga., shopping center in recent weeks, apparently plans to set up shop in Marietta, Ga. Marietta granted a business license effective July 1 for the store. When a reporter visited the shop, there was no sign the store opened yet. More

Gold experts have further cut back price forecasts for the metal this year after a sluggish first half, a quarterly Reuters poll showed, while gains in the dollar and a dearth of physical demand are likely to clip any attempted return to last September's record high for the rest of the year.
