Essential Oil Vapors Against Two Stored Product Moths
NPMA
A Greek research team, led by P.A. Eliopoulos from the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaly, recently published research that evaluated essential oil performance against the Indianmeal moth (Plodia interpunctella) and Mediterranean flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella). The essential oil vapors from spearmint and sweet basil were used like fumigants and moths of all life stages were exposed to concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 1,500 µl/liter air for 24 hours. Both essential oil vapors were almost equally effective at killing adult moths, causing over 80 percent mortality even at the lowest tested dose. While egg mortality was also high (73-79 percent for basil; 56-60 percent for spearmint), the larval and pupal stages were much less susceptible to the vapors and as such, the authors concluded that these compounds are not effective enough for use against these moth species.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of the Journal of Economic Entomology under the title, "Fumigant toxicity of essential oils from basil and spearmint against two major pyralid pests of stored products."

Colorado S. 119, Reauthorization of the Colorado Pesticide Applicator Act
NPMA
On Wednesday, April 22, S. 115 passed the Colorado Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources with several amendments. The amendments include; adding 2 additional members to the Advisory Committee, additional training requirements for applicators, internet access to finalized enforcement actions against pesticide violations, and shortening the Sunset review provision from 9 to 7 years. Coming out of the House Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources was a significant hurdle. S. 115 is expected to pass the House and then go to conference between the Senate and House, which is expected to be contentious. CPCA and NPMA have been and will continue to work closely with key stakeholders on the passage of S. 115 before the end of the Colorado legislative session on May 6.

New York S. 4833, Ban on the use of Neonicotinoids
NPMA
On April 21, S. 4833 was introduced in the New York Senate. S. 4833 would ban the use, sale or transportation of neonicotinoids within the state of New York, effective January 1, 2017. This is a very broad ban, and would have a major impact on the structural pest control industry. The ban would also include altrazine and metalaxyl. At this point S. 4833 does not appear to have much viability.
