The Odor in Odorous House Ants
NPMA
A duo of researchers, led by Dr. Clint Penick of North Carolina State University, recently published a research paper that explored an age old question: what exactly is the odor given off by the odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) when crushed? To homeowners and pest management professionals alike, this seemingly insignificant information can actually hold a lot of value when making an ID in the field. Rotten coconuts is the most common answer, and the one given in the NPMA Field Guide, but a range of possibilities can be found across the web (including rancid butter). Chemical analysis of volatiles from live odorous house ant workers, fresh and rotten coconut, and blue cheese found that blue cheese had the greatest similarity, though rotten coconut shared some of the same methyl ketones found in the workers and cheese.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of American Entomologist under the title, “The true odor of the odorous house ant.”

HEARD ON THE HILL

Fumigant Transportation Changes
NPMA
NPMA recently became aware that pest professionals transporting Degesch Phostoxin (aluminum phosphide) are now required to appropriately placard their vehicles. Previously, Degesch had obtained a special permit (DOT – SP 11329), which exempted private motor vehicles used in pest control operation from placard requirements for the transportation of Phostoxin in aluminum canisters smaller than 1.5 kg. The special permit has been canceled by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) resulting in mandatory compliance with placarding requirements detailed in 49 CFR §§ 172.504 and 172.548, “Dangerous When Wet.”

Degesch has informed NPMA that they are in the process of reauthorizing the special permit though DOT. NPMA is also pursuing independent efforts to assist in reauthorizing the special permit on behalf of pest professionals.

If you have any questions, concerns or would like copies of the information on the required placard information please click here.

Senate Introduces Pesticide Uses Near Clean Water Bill
NPMA
On June 3, U.S. Senators Mike Crapo (ID-R) and Claire McCaskill (MO-D) led a bipartisan group of senators in introducing the Sensible Environmental Protection Act (SEPA) S. 1500. SEPA seeks to clarify congressional intent and authority of FIFRA’s regulatory authority over pesticides, rather than the Clean Water Act (CWA). SEPA would do away with duplicative CWA water permits for pesticide users near navigable waters. SEPA currently has 14 cosponsors. NPMA is currently involved with a coalition that is actively engaging Senators on this issue.

Legislation: New York, IPM and Ticks
NPMA
On June 3, S. 5802 was introduced in the New York senate. S. 5802 would direct the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to develop guidelines for treating tick infestation in residential properties using IPM. Effective pesticide applications are one of the IPM methods listed in the legislation.
