Plant Your Own Pollinator Garden for NPMA National Community Day of Service
NPMA
The issue of pollinator health continues to be a hot topic in the media and the public. NPMA and PPMA have devoted vast resources to addressing this issue on a variety of fronts, particularly in the areas of public policy and public opinion. This year, as an extension of our commitment, we urge all NPMA members to take part in "Plant Your Own Pollinator Garden" NPMA National Community Day of Service on August 22, 2015 (National Honey Bee Day).

Consider taking part in this initiative by planting a pollinator garden in your community. To assist member companies in navigating the steps involved in this process, NPMA’s consumer education arm, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) has created a toolkit containing pollinator-friendly plant and flower suggestions, media relations outreach materials, social media posts and a logo for use on t-shirts.

Each interested company will need to secure the necessary permits for the gardens in their respective cities. While the community garden application process varies from city to city, members should begin by contacting their city halls or visiting their city's website and inquire about additional information. There will be webinar in the coming weeks to answer any questions about the process.

By providing foraging sites and bringing awareness to the need for collaboration among various parties on the issue of pollinator health, our industry can play a leadership role in protecting pollinators while ensuring the safety of the American public.

Argentine Ant Control in Natural Areas
NPMA
A team of entomologists, led by Dr. Jinbo Song of Clemson University, recently published research investigating how to optimally control Argentine ants (Linepithema humile). Argentine ants are an invasive species that can be difficult to control due to their ability to form massive super-colonies. Previously published work on control of Argentine ants has focused on urban locales while this study used field sites at Lake Greenwood State Park, SC. There are inherent difficulties in controlling social pests in open environments so the researchers set out to determine how closely bait stations need to be placed to achieve satisfactory reductions in ant activity. Dr. Song and his colleagues determined that a suitable population reduction was achieved if bait stations (containing liquid ant bait) were no more than 20 meters apart.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of Journal of Economic Entomology under the title, “Using the DAS-ELISA test to establish an effective distance between bait stations for control of Linepithema humile (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in natural areas”

HEARD ON THE HILL

Update on Degesch Phostoxin Special Permit
NPMA
NPMA has been in communication with the Department of Transportation Special Permits Division and Degesch America Inc. The DOT recently confirmed that special permit DOT-SP 11329 remains active and valid. Degesch timely filed a letter for reconsideration, which enables the continued use by licensed pest management operators until a final decision is rendered by the administrator, this would include an appeal if timely filed after the reconsideration. Licensed pest management operators must abide by all terms of the permit, but will not be required to placard the vehicle or obtain a CDL.

Click here to see a confirmation email from DOT addressing the requirements of the special permit and pertinent parameters for pest professionals.

Waters of the U.S and NPDES Permit Implication to PMPs
NPMA
On June 10, S. 1140 passed the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee. This bill would repeal the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rule, and would require the EPA to re-write the rule with specific guidelines that limits waters that can be regulated. A similar bill H.R. 1732 already passed the house in May. The President has indicated he would veto any legislation that reached his desk, which would limit or alter the WOTUS rule, and it is very unlikely a 2/3rd majority can be reached to override the veto. The battle over the implementation of WOTUS is likely to occur during the appropriations process and in the Federal Courts.

A summary of each rule is below, followed by text of the full rule. All three proposed rules are open for comment. NPMA has been in contact with the Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC) who are actively engaged in these regulations.
