RESPIRATORY PROTECTION PROGRAM — LEARN HOW YOU CAN KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES SAFE

Wednesday, July 15 | 1 p.m. ET

Presented by Darla Petersen and Linda Lane of National Fit Testing Services
Protecting employees' health is the primary goal in any industry. OSHA CFR 29.1910.134 are mandated respiratory safety procedures protecting those producing and working in the pest industry. If your employees are exposed to respiratory hazards that may affect their health, you must provide them appropriate respiratory protection. This includes, but is not limited to, a written program, medical evaluations to assure they are healthy enough to wear a respirator, and finally initial and annual respirator fit testing and training. Spend some time learning what it takes to create a program and keep current. Register for this hour-long webinar to help you avoid audit penalty fees from OSHA.

Resistance of Cigarette Beetles to Phosphine
NPMA
The cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) is one a significant pest of tobacco, spices, coffee, rice, dried fruits, leather and a host of other items worldwide. A team of scientists, led by Dr. Özgür Sağlam of Kansas State University, investigated resistance of cigarette beetles to phosphine fumigation after reports of resistant populations in the southeastern United States. Six populations were collected from the field and subjected to 50 ppm of phosphine for 20 hours at 77°F and allowed 7 days post-treatment to recover. Each field population screened had a least some resistant beetles and 4/6 populations had more than 90 percent resistant individuals. Typical treatment approaches with phosphine (200 ppm for 4 days) were not effective against these resistant populations and an elevated set of treatment parameters (600 ppm for 6 days) were more effective, yet still did not kill a large number of beetles. This paper was published in the most recent volume of the Journal of Economic Entomology under the title, "Resistance of Lasioderma serricorne (Coleoptera: Anobiidae) to fumigation with phosphine."

NPMA Submits Comments on EPA Settlement in California Endangered Species Case
NPMA
Last week NPMA formerly submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in response to the June settlement agreement reached in Center for Biological Diversity v. EPA. This case focused on EPA’s alleged violation of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and sought usage prohibitions and restrictions on numerous EPA registered products used by the pesticide industry. A previous court order placed interim use restrictions on 75 pesticides in the San Francisco Bay Area until EPA and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services (the Services) completed effect determinations and consultations. Currently, the EPA and the Services are in the process of making final determinations on 59 of the 75 pesticides, while 16 products remain in limbo according to the settlement agreement.

NPMA formerly requested EPA to lift the interim use limitations on the 16 pesticides where a determination has been made, and further requested the interim use limitations lifted on the remaining 59 pesticides where a “not likely to adversely affect determination has been made.”

Maine — South Portland Proposes to Ban Pesticides
NPMA
On July 13 the South Portland City Council is expected to introduce a proposed ordinance that would ban the use of pesticides within city property. At a City Council workshop on June 8, 2015 the environmental organization Protect South Portland made a presentation regarding the use and effects of pesticides and herbicides. Following the predominantly anti-pesticide presentation and public comments the council indicated they would begin drafting an ordinance to address the use of pesticides within city limits, and plan to discuss the issue further at the July 13, 2015 City Council meeting.

The potential pesticide banning ordinance has not yet been introduced, therefore we can only speculate as to what it may include. It is believed to be similar to the recently enacted ordinance in Ogunquit, which restricts the outdoor application of pesticides on public AND private land.

NPMA is working closely with PMPs in Maine to ensure a large contingent of professionals attend the meeting to show support for the pesticide industry.
