With City Heat Comes Tree Pests
NPMA
Gloomy scales (Melanaspis tenebricosa) are a significant tree pest throughout much of the eastern and central United States, especially in urban areas. These armored scales, in the family Diaspididae, attach themselves to silver and red maple, box elder, sycamore, and elm trees, and suck sap, potentially stunting growth, leading to branch dieback, a reduction in vitality, and tree death. A duo of researchers from North Carolina State University, led by Adam Dale, has been investigating the effect of urban heat on the incidence of gloomy scales in Raleigh, NC on red maple trees. Urban heat islands are a phenomenon defined by increased temperatures due to asphalt, buildings, concrete, and a concentration of human activity that makes some cities have higher temperatures than surrounding suburban and rural areas.

Increasing temperatures were identified as the key predictor in the abundance of gloomy scales in an area. The coolest sites produced about 20 offspring per female, while the warmest sites yielded three times that number. Red maples in these hotter locations had total gloomy scale populations 200 times those of the cool sites! Additionally, higher temperatures are known to cause considerable stress to trees, even without an abundance of sap-sucking pests. Planting more trees and trying to introduce recharge areas and shade may help counteract the urban heat island effect and reduce the number of pest scales.

HEARD FROM THE HILL

House Fails to Pass NPMA-Supported Pesticide Bill
NPMA
Although more than 250 members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted last night for legislation exempting lawful pesticide applications performed directly to or near bodies of water from burdensome and redundant Clean Water Act permits, the bill did not pass the body because it required two-thirds vote under the procedure by which the measure was brought up for consideration. NPMA and countless other pesticide applicator and manufacturing groups support H.R. 935, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act. Click here to read more about the legislation.
