NEWS FROM NATIONAL

NPMA's National Pollinator Day of Service is Aug. 22
NPMA
There's still time to "Bee Kind" and organize your company to plant a community pollinator garden during this industry day of service to coincide with National Honey Bee Day. This year, as an extension of our commitment to pollinators, we urge all NPMA members to take part in "Plant Your Own Pollinator Garden" a National Community Day of Service on Aug. 22, 2015 (National Honey Bee Day).

Consider taking part in this initiative by planting a pollinator garden in your community. To assist member companies in navigating the steps involved in this process, NPMA and the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA) have teamed up to create a toolkit containing pollinator-friendly plant and flower suggestions, media relations outreach materials, social media posts and a logo for use on t-shirts.

For more information and to access the toolkit, click here.

WDO Survey: Termite Treatments and Using 'Call Before You Dig' Services
NPMA
In many states, pest management professionals are required to call a hotline before digging, trenching, or even installing termite bait stations. NPMA’s WDO Committee has put together a brief survey and is hoping that you will take a couple of minutes to participate. The survey seeks to clarify this issue, including:

  • How aware PMPs are about the requirements in the states in which they operate
  • Whether PMPs encounter any issues with underground utility lines while performing treatments
  • How feasible it is to comply with state "call before you dig" requirements

All participants will be kept confidential and your participation is greatly appreciated. Feel free to send this link to anyone that performs termite work.

Investigation a New Chemical Compound Against the American Cockroach
NPMA
Dr. Elham Salama, of Benha University in Egypt, investigated how a common chemical compound performed as an insecticide against one of the most common pests worldwide, the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Potassium alum, also called potassium aluminum sulfate and potash alum, currently has a variety of commercial uses as a tanning agent, flame retardant, medically to reduce bleeding, and as an antibacterial in deodorant but its potential as an insecticide was previously unknown. Potassium alum crystals are water-soluble and, after a period of starvation, adult and nymphal American cockroaches were fed the compound while control cockroaches were given white bread. Surprisingly, there was not a significant preference for either food source. The insecticidal effects of potassium alum consumption were characterized as chronic rather than acute with time to mortality ranging from 4 days in nymphs to up to a month for adults. Gravid females that fed on potassium alum yielded smaller oothecae and non-functional eggs. This compound is not registered as an insecticide in the United States but this research will likely lead to a more in-depth exploration of its feasibility to be used as one in the future.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of the Journal of Economic Entomology under the title, "A novel use for potassium alum as controlling agent against Periplaneta americana (Dictyoptera: Blattidae)."

HEARD ON THE HILL

Proposed EPA Certification and Training Rule
NPMA
EPA recently released a prepublication version of the proposed changes to the Federal Certification and Training requirements for pesticide applicators. NPMA’s initial analysis of the proposal can be found here. Last week, the NPMA Policy Team had an initial meeting with EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs Field and External Affairs Division (FEAD) to discuss the rule, clarify some initial questions and better understand the proposed changes. NPMA continues to analyze the proposal and determine impacts on the structural pest control industry and intends to develop comprehensive comments after the proposed rule is officially posted in the Federal Register, which is expected next week.

State Bed Bug Law Resource Updated
NPMA
NPMA has updated state specific bed bug laws and rules into one document. Click here to review the information. In a nutshell, twenty-three states have passed or enacted bed bug-specific legislation or rulemaking, including Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The compilation will also be posted on the EPA website, at their request for an updated version.

This compilation of bed bug laws in the 50 states includes only those states that specifically incorporate “bed bug” in their statutory or regulatory scheme. Liability imposed on landlords and tenants concerning bed bugs continues to vary from state to state regardless of whether “bed bug” laws have been implemented, due to the implied warranty of habitability. Innkeepers may also have a heightened duty depending upon state law. Therefore, this list is a reference point - but neither an exhaustive nor definitive list of how each state may handle a bed bug incident.

Commercial Committee Completes Food Auditor Reference Guide
NPMA
The NPMA Commercial Committee has completed a food safety auditor reference guide. The reference guide compiles pest management standards of all the major food auditors; AIB, BRC, FSSC 22000, NSF International, Primus, Silliker, and SQF. Over the past 8 months the committee compiled each auditor’s relevant pest management standards and then reached-out to each auditor individually to obtain final review and approval of the committee’s interpretation of their standards. The final product is an easy-to-use reference guide for those companies performing pest management in food facilities.

Click here to access the reference guide.
