Geographic Information System
NPMA
Geographic information technology (GIS), a term used to describe the collection, management, and manipulation of data according to location, has been used to improve outcomes in urban pest management, especially for public health pests in municipalities, for years. A collaboration between scientists and public health officials in Madrid, Spain, has yielded a long-term analysis of an implemented GIS program in Madrid. The program mapped a variety of pest sightings, treatments, environmental, and socioeconomic data; culling information from public health officials and even citizen complaints. For example, a map of Madrid was generated showing citizen sightings of rats overlaid with information about rat bait consumption over the same area. This type of information can improve pest management outcomes and fine-tune overall prevention and treatment efficiency.

This research, "Geographic information technology applications for urban integrated pest management" was conducted by José-María Cámara, Pilar Torres, and Manual García-Howlett and presented at the 2014 International Conference on Urban Pests in Zurich, Switzerland.

HEARD FROM THE HILL

Termite Researchers Write USDA in Support of NPMA Spearheaded Legislation
NPMA
The University of Maryland's Dr. Barbara Thorne and 25 other leading termite researchers recently wrote U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack encouraging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide funding to support the conehead termite eradication program developed by researchers, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and private sector pest management professionals. The letter piggybacks off a provision contained in report accompanying the fiscal year 2015 Agricultural Appropriations Act that the NPMA helped develop. Click here to read the letter.

California Carbon Monoxide Device Sent to Gov. Brown
NPMA
The California Assembly recently approved and sent to Governor Jerry Brown for his consideration legislation requiring the director of the Department of Pesticide Regulation to regulate the use of carbon monoxide pest control devices and to adopt and enforce regulations to provide for the proper, safe, and efficient use of these devices, as specified. Under the measure, the term “carbon monoxide pest control devices” is defined as any method or instrument using carbon monoxide to prevent, eliminate, destroy, or mitigate burrowing rodent pests. Homeland Security Revising Chemical Facility Standards
NPMA
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) yesterday issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) related to the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS). DHS raises a number of key questions in the ANPRM including whether to add chemicals to, and/or the delete or modify the current Chemicals of Interest (COI) list. The only products used by the structural pest control industry that are presently designated as COI are phosphine-based fumigants, in certain quantities. The initial COI DHS proposed in 2007 included all of the structural fumigants but NPMA convinced DHS that was unnecessary. DHS is accepting comments on the ANPRM until Oct. 17. Click here to read the ANPRM.
