Chemical Communication in House Dust Mites
NPMA
House dust mites have attracted a lot of attention in the media over the past couple of decades. These tiny (1/75 of an inch) arthropods live in structures and feed on shed skin from humans and animals and other dried proteinaceous materials. Not only is that concept unsettling to most people, especially since beds are among the most likely living sites, but the case skins and feces from these mites can also cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma attacks. There are two species that are commonly found in association with humans: the American house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae) and the European house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus), though their common names don’t necessarily indicate where they are likely to be found.

A team of German scientists, led by Dr. Johannes Steidle, investigated the function of aggregation and sex pheromones in the behavior of European house dust mites adults and nymphs. By releasing synthetic pheromones through an olfactometer, researchers observed mites reacting strongly to introduced pheromones and were even attracted to them from over 50 cm away. This research indicates that pheromones could eventually be used to monitor house dust mite infestations.

This paper, “Pheromonal Communication in the European House Dust Mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus” was published in the most recent volume of the journal Insects. The full-text can be accessed here.

HEARD FROM THE HILL

Federal Housing Agency Responds to NPMA
NPMA
Pest management companies that inspect Freddie Mac Real Estate Owned (REO) properties for termites may also perform repair damage work, according to a recent letter the Federal Housing Finance Authority sent to NPMA. The communication represents a reversal of sorts of longstanding Freddie Mac policy that precluded pest management companies that inspected Freddie Mac REO properties for wood destroying insects from performing any damage repair work. According to the letter, damage caused by termites and other wood destroying organisms can be repaired by a licensed and qualified pest management company but repairs to features of the structure that caused the infestation such as the plumbing, roof and HVAC system must be performed by a Freddie Mac approved general contractor or preservation and maintenance vendor.
