Members Advised to Review Their Web Photos
NPMA
When developing their websites, pest management companies sometimes download photos/images from the internet and assume they are in the public domain and may be used without any restrictions. You may not know it, but you may be infringing a copyright. It’s not uncommon for a PMP to get a letter from an attorney demanding payment for using a copyrighted photo and threatening litigation if the company does not settle. It can cost many thousands of dollars. NPMA recommends:

1. That PMPs review their websites (and other images) to be sure they are not infringing copyrights.

2. If you need high-quality pest photos, NPMA has a FREE photo library of professional pest images available on my.npmapestworld.org for members to use on their websites and marketing materials. Please contact us at npma@pestworld.org if you need assistance logging in.

3. Click here for an insightful discussion about using web images.

Chagas Disease in Texas: More of a Threat than Previously Thought?
NPMA
Conenose, or kissing bugs (Triatoma spp.), are blood-feeding assassin bugs implicated in transmitting disease throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America. Munis Huhaya, of the University of Texas at El Paso, led a research team that collected conenose bugs in southern Texas and screened them for the protozoan parasite (Trypanosoma cruzi) that causes Chagas disease in humans. Surprisingly, 61 percent of the 39 conenose bugs captured were found to be infected with the disease-causing parasite. Chagas disease transmission typically occurs when a sleeping person is bitten on exposed skin and feces containing the parasite are scratched into the bite-wound by the sleeping person. Many people remain asymptomatic while 20-30 percent of sufferers develop debilitating or life-threatening symptoms.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of the journal Acta Tropica under the title, “Incidence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in triatomines collected at Indio Mountains Research Station."

HEARD ON THE HILL

Urge Congress to Stop Drastic Overtime Changes
NPMA
Act now and join those voicing concerns with the Department of Labor's (DOL) dramatic overtime proposal that could cost jobs and decrease room for advancement in workplaces across the country.

The comment period for the DOL's proposed rule closed on Friday Sept. 4, 2015 and it is time to tell Congress that we need legislative action to stop this rule from going into effect as proposed!
  • The proposal, which alters the white collar exemptions under the Fair Labor Standards Act, includes raising the minimum salary threshold to $50,440 annually ($970 weekly) - an unprecedented 113 percent increase. This increase will result in limited workplace flexibility and increased labor costs for businesses across the country.
  • The department is considering indexing the minimum salary in order to automatically raise the salary threshold on an annual basis, rather than increasing the salary itself through the proper notice-and-comment rulemaking process.

Act now - Join thousands of Americans and send a letter to your elected officials in Congress asking them to support legislative action that stops DOL's unworkable proposed overtime rule. By clicking on the link below you can quickly send a letter to your Congressional Representatives concerning this important issue.

FDA Releases Final Rules Strengthening National Food Safety Requirements
NPMA
On Sept. 10, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released final rules; Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food, and Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Animal Food. The rules were statutorily mandated through the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) signed into law in January 2011. FSMA is a broad initiative to overhaul the national food supply system in an effort to strengthen food safety through increased accountability, oversight and preventative measures. The rules released on September 10 require all registered food facilities to maintain a food safety plan, perform a hazard analysis and institute preventive controls and verify these preventive controls are properly working. Non-compliance with these new rules can lead to hefty fines and lengthy injunctions. The new rules highlight the value of proper pest management within food facilities, and our industry’s continued effort to provide these valuable services.
