Updated Distribution of Africanized Honey Bees in California
NPMA
Africanized, or ‘killer, honey bees (Apis mellifera scutellata) are characteristically aggressive bees that swarm often and readily hybridize with the domesticated European honey bees common in North America. Africanized honey bees, which have been slowly moving north from South America and have been in the United States since at least 1990, are currently found in AL, AR, AZ, CA, FL, NM, OK, and TX. A pair of scientists from the University of California at San Diego, Drs. Yoshiaki Kono and Joshua Kohn, recently published their efforts to determine the prevalence of Africanized honey bees in California. Honey bees with Africanized genes were found as far north as the central valley, just south of Sacramento. Over 60 percent of honey bee workers sampled in San Diego Country were determined to be Africanized or contain Africanized genes. Given the high numbers of Africanized honey bees in southern California, PMPs are reminded to take special care and harvesting feral swarms is not recommended.

This paper was published in the most recent volume of the journal PLoS ONE under the title, “Range and frequency of Africanized honey bees in California (USA)”.

HEARD ON THE HILL

NPMA Attends Two-Day SFIREG Committee Meeting
NPMA
Members of NPMA’s Public Policy Staff spent two days at EPA last week to participate in the State FIFRA Research and Evaluation Groups (SFIREG) two working committees. SFIREG’s Environmental Quality Issues (EQI) working committee and SFIREG’s Pesticide Operations & Management (POM) working committee are each currently comprised of 10 state representatives, in addition to the Chair. The current chair of the POM is Bonnie Rabe from New Mexico and current chair of the EQI is Kirk Cook from Washington. At the meeting the groups discussed topics ranging from pollinators to cannabis and hemp.

Pollinators was the main topic of discussion. The committee discussed a number of issues including environmental hazard statements, bee kill reporting elements, and measuring the effectiveness of Managed Pollinator Protection Plans (MP3s). NPMA learned that EPA received more than 46,000 submissions during the pollinator comment period, which they are now sorting through with no confirmed date on when review of the submission will be complete.

EPA provided a short summary of the recently proposed certification and training rule. This week, members of the NPMA Public Policy Committee will convene via webinar to review the changes in the proposed rule and begin formulating industry comments.
