The two companies have combined annual sales of $55 million, but Ripon vice president of operations Jeff Spence told PrintWeek, "This was an asset acquisition — so at least in our eyes it's not a merger and it's not a 'tuck in.' We're operating with them under a transition services agreement, so outside of the 10 sales reps that have joined Ripon, the rest of the employees are still working for Sells."

One of the challenges in design-for-print is how to effectively transform an ordinary print into an extraordinary one. Printers of all types seek to compete, but must identify innovative and resourceful ways to create value-added finishing. Interestingly, RHUV special effect inks, which are applied only by screen printing onto any previously printed material, are specifically designed to provide a visually enhanced effect, enabling commercial and graphic printers to increase profits on each printing job, again and again.

Almost like the search for the Holy Grail, the quest for greater visibility has similarly been driving supply chains across the globe for the past decade. One could argue that the supply chain visibility era started in the late 1990s, when Art Mesher, then an analyst at Gartner and now CEO of Descartes Systems, wrote a series of research notes on "The Three V's of Supply Chain," which were velocity, variability and visibility.

Paper, on the face of it, has a high carbon footprint. The Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment conducted a study on the life cycle of paper several years ago, which found paper mill emissions contributed around 60 percent to the overall emissions, with transportation and the final fate of the paper making up the majority of the rest of the emissions. Printing on the paper and forestry were exceedingly small in comparison.

The difference is huge, and so is the cost of in-house versus commercial printing. That's why professional jobs should be produced by professionals.
