Thousands of Coloradans use state parks every winter to ice fish, snowmobile or to go cross country skiing. And when the weather gets as cold as it is now, the ice on frozen lakes can get quite thick. But Ed Schlottack, who ice fishes every day, says the ice at Chatfield State Park can be deceiving. "You’ll find 10 inches of ice all over, and then all of a sudden it goes boom and you have one inch," Schlottack said. “There are springs under these ponds.” More

The children at Preston Veterans Memorial School in Preston, Conn., needed an after-school program that wouldn’t cost the town or their parents too much. Principal Kathryn Walsh got together with Parks and Recreation Director Gail Rigney. Rigney hired a parent to coordinate volunteers. For six weeks, volunteers showed up at school every Wednesday.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently released his budget summary for 2010-11. His budget proposal includes a new controversial strategy to fund all 278 state parks using revenues from an oil offshore drilling project that may never happen. The proposal comes the same day as supporters of a ballot initiative that would secure reliable, permanent funding for state parks announced the official launching of a volunteer signature-gathering campaign to qualify the initiative. Texas city looks to charge businesses for park use

Charging "for profit" businesses for using public parks will probably be adopted by the city of Brenham, Texas in some form, but council members recently said they want more input before deciding. Council members asked that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board hold more discussions on the issue, then return with recommendations. More
