Parks are for people, playgrounds are for kids. It's important to make that little distinction, because while kids can easily use parks, playgrounds aren't the place for adults unless they're accompanying children. Erika Mailman first noticed this at Miller Park in Oakland, Calif., where adults were sitting without kids at the picnic tables inside the fenced playground area. She never minded anyone in the larger park itself, but says “it seemed odd to see people within the clearly-defined boundaries of the playground.” These adults didn't look like safe companions to share the turf with. More

Yosemite Park Ranger Shelton Johnson has worked in National Park service for more than 20 years. He did not grow up in a small town in the mountains. He was born in Detroit to parents of black, Cherokee and Seminole heritage. He recently won the National Freeman Tilden Award, the highest award in the nation for interpretation, largely as recognition of his collaboration with Ken Burns' on a landmark documentary The National Parks: America's Best Idea. Residents and visitors to Greenville County, S.C.,  will find nine newly expanded park facilities open this year, which represent an investment of $48.6 million. They range from seven athletic fields in Berea to a 95-acre passive park at Cedar Falls to Pleasant Ridge Camp and Retreat Center, to a section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, water parks, dog parks and more. More

Nancy Merrill, Idaho state parks director, has begun her first budget presentation to JFAC. Her department’s budget request has changed significantly from the one first submitted; now, as a result of a deal announced last week by Merrill and Gov. Butch Otter, it calls for cutting $5.171 million in state general funds out of the Department of Parks and Recreation, a reduction of $8 million in overall funding. More

Nearly half of drivers opt not to pay $5 for state parks

Nearly half of Washington drivers, when renewing their vehicle licenses, are opting not to pay an extra $5 to support state parks. Officials blame the economy. Since the program started in September, 51.5 percent of car owners have volunteered to pay the extra $5, according to Virginia Painter of the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. More
