Retirees trade work for rent at cash-poor parks
The New York Times
Share

A cold wind whipped down the Texas
plains on the night last month that Sharon Smith, 68, and her husband, Bill, 73, arrived here to be work-campers. In the dark, they had trouble setting up their camper. But Ms. Smith, a former teacher’s aide from Sioux Falls, S.D., said she looked up at the starry sky, shook off a few of the burrs she had picked up lying on the ground working on their truck, and told herself it would get better. It did. The life of a work-camper, volunteering in places like Falcon State Park in deep South
Texas in return for free rent, is not without its bumps.

California's environmental policy starts in kindergarten
Ventura County Star via Contra Costa Times

In what officials are calling a landmark move, California public schools now have state-approved environmental curriculum
for students all the way from kindergarten through 12th grade. The state Board of Education this year signed off on 76 sections of curriculum — part of California's Education and the Environment Initiative — and they are expected to be available for teachers online in the spring at no charge.

Guns are now permitted -- but not necessarily welcomed -- in national parks
Los Angeles Times
Share

A federal law taking effect Monday may alter the standard checklist for many Americans as they pack to visit their national parks: insect repellent, snacks, hiking boots . . .
double-barreled shotgun. Visitors now can pack heat in any national park from Gates of the Arctic to Everglades, provided they comply with the firearms laws of the park's home state, according to the new law that was passed as an amendment to credit-card legislation.

It was backtracking time for Seattle Parks Superintendent Timothy Gallagher as he announced in a news release that he isn't imposing a total ban on smoking in city parks after all. Starting April 1, you can smoke, chew or engage in "other tobacco use" as long as you're 25 feet from other park patrons.

Club has kids on move to healthier lifestyle
Houston Chronicle

Rebecca Velazquez has become a healthier cook and more discriminating shopper. Soda is no longer welcome in her house, and colorful salads have become a staple at dinner. She prepared green enchiladas for
her family of five last recently. Instead of deep-frying the tortillas, she lightly browned them on the stove with a little bit of oil and finished them in the oven. Her youngest two children were served a pair of enchiladas, topped “with just a little bit of cheese.” “They're eating a salad with that and a spoonful of rice,” she said. The menu adjustments are one of the lessons the family learned as part of the Keep Fit Club, a free program offered to overweight and
obese 10- to 18-year-olds in the Texas Children's Health Plan, which provides medical care for 250,000 area children on Medicaid or CHIP.

Non-profit groups may aid parks
The Arizona Republic

Phoenix officials may need to turn to non-profit and private groups to keep certain "quality of life" facilities open. Even help from a two percent food tax isn't enough to save Arizona Horse Lovers Park, the Shemer Art Center and Museum or the North Mountain and South Mountain education centers.

From April 1, 1983, to April 1, 1987, Steve Newman walked around the world. His solo trek covered 15,509 miles through 21 countries on five continents. It ended with a loop at East Fork State Park in southern Ohio, not far from his hometown of Bethel, Ohio. Newman parlayed his trip
into two books: Worldwalker (that became his nickname) and Letters From Steven. That last loop has become the Steve Newman Worldwalker Trail, a 32-mile perimeter loop for backpackers and equestrians.

Florida kids take a hike

Eric Thompson looked down, his white Nike shoes
barely safe from the mud. While hiking through Prairie Creek Preserve, Eric, 9, was looking for wildlife amid the trees, leaves and log walkways. Eric and four classmates from Lake Forest Elementary School explored the Prairie Creek Preserve Saturday as part of Take A Hike, Florida!, an event created for the Florida Forever program. The hike at Prairie Creek was one of 12 walks throughout Florida recently. Florida Forever is an organization that purchases and preserves land in the state.

Dank huts, open pits — public facilities in our treasured parks are not always pleasant. So instead, state parks are being equipped with solar-operated composting toilets, a green alternative to
outhouses. "It’s a pretty nice toilet, just like going at home," said Nathan Hale, state parks supervisor in Redding, California.

Finding a solution to fund California's parks
San Francisco Chronicle

A group of 30 of the state's top
recreation experts is teaming with volunteers from the Harvard School of Business to create a new framework and business plan designed to restore the California State Parks system as No. 1 in America. "Something has to be done that's dramatic," said Bob Hansen of the Save the Redwoods League, former director of the Yosemite Fund. "We're writing a new vision and plan for state parks to get them beyond funding, to get them back to when they were the best state parks system in country."
