Why it makes economic sense to invest in national parks
SmartPlanet    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We like to think of our parks as apolitical. The buffalo in Yellowstone and the bears in the Great Smoky Mountains don’t think too much about what happens on Capitol Hill. But the guy in charge of protecting these animals and their environments does have Capitol Hill on his mind, and he has one thing to say: Give us (or rather, the parks) the money. More

In Utah, a move to seize federal land
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Long frustrated by Washington's control over much of their state, Utah legislators are proposing a novel way to deal with federal land—seize it and develop it. The Utah House of Representatives recently passed a bill allowing the state to use eminent domain to take land the federal government owns and has long protected from development. The state wants to develop three hotly contested areas—national forest land in the Wasatch Mountains north of Salt Lake City, land in a proposed wilderness area in the red rock southwestern corner of the state, and a stretch of desert outside of Arches National Park that the Obama administration has declared off-limits to oil and gas development. HealthDay via BusinessWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New research finds that the prevalence of obesity has grown in recent years among children aged 10 to 17, and certain kids are being especially hard hit. And another study in the same journal points to a possible reason why: Kids are snacking on potato chips, candy and other fattening foods an average of almost three times per day. The findings on obesity, which appear in the March issue of Health Affairs, are based on the U.S. National Survey of Children's Health. More

Tina Fleming need not look any further than the Gwinnett County (Georgia) Parks and Recreation mission statement to know that multigenerational programming is not an option. "In partnership with our citizens," the statement begins, "Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation provides high quality, broad-based parks, facilities, programs and services creating a sense of community, enabling a safe and secure environment, and enhancing Gwinnett's quality of life." Parks evoke positive memories from residents
Clinton Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Gary Herrity, Clinton Herald’s historical columnist, writes "When people write to me of the positive things they remember in Clinton-Lyons, Iowa, our parks are always high on their list, probably due to the many fond memories of fun activities. Several Sino Park frequenters remember the ball games, dates they had there, Sino's nearby store (later Kai Hansen’s), and the supervisors who helped them as umpires or teachers of crafts. More

Park passes as political payoff?
Denver Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
A Colorado legislative proposal to allow seniors to buy lifetime state park passes for a bargain price seems like a solution looking for a problem. Seniors currently get a break, paying half price, $30, for an annual park pass. And we don't begrudge them that discount. However, a bill pending in the state legislature would instruct the Colorado State Parks Board to set a price for a lifetime pass, not to exceed $150, that probably will result in less revenue for parks over time.

Top 10 gas-storing national forests are in Northwest, study says
The News Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The top 10 national forests for storing greenhouse gases in the United States are in the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska, according to an analysis recently released by the Wilderness Society. The storage of carbon helps combat the threat of climate change, officials say. Carbon stored in the trees and soils of the moist national forests in Washington, Oregon and southeast Alaska totals some 9.8 billion metric tons. By comparison, one year of fossil fuel burned in the United States contains 5.8 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide, the study said. More
