Childhood obesity-a long, complicated fight begins
Connecticut Post    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last month, a report issued by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Foundation and Partnership for Prevention, voiced concerns, saying "obesity is growing faster than any previous public health issue our nation has faced." The city of Danbury, Conn., is trying to better the situation. It has formed a new organization called the Coalition for Healthy Kids, which tries to bring together every element in the community that this epidemic touches -- city schools, Danbury Hospital, the area public health departments, the Regional YMCA, area businesses, the United Way of Western Connecticut, and the city of Danbury Parks and Recreation Department. Engaging newcomers in city parks: The New York model
National League of Cities    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Park officials, city planners and immigrant advocates are exploring opportunities to increase usage of city parks among local immigrant communities and seeking ways to incorporate these new residents into the traditional public parks system. Public parks are one of the most important assets in cities, and parks facilities should be available to all residents. One of the challenges faced by new immigrants is the lack of awareness regarding city services, which might explain their limited use of city parks and facilities in some cities. The key question is: how should city parks adapt to the recent demographic changes in their communities? Planning for fitness
The Salt Lake Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study by University of Utah assistant professor Shaunna Burbidge supports the Utah Department of Health's contention that too many Utah neighborhoods are developed in ways that discourage physical activity. And according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released a report this year correlating obesity with neighborhood designs, poor community planning contributes to expanding waistlines. Streets without bike lanes, neighborhoods without sidewalks and communities without convenient parks and recreational facilities are the municipal planning equivalent of a dozen donuts, the CDC says. These ill-advised designs encourage driving and discourage exercise, and as such, are a breeding ground for obesity. More

PR Newswire    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced last week the results of a scoping study of the health risks from inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with synthetic turf and crumb rubber. It concluded that "concentrations of components monitored in this study were below levels of concern." The study further validates the statements of safety by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other governmental agencies, including the New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation and Dept of Health, the New York City Dept of Health, and the California EPA in recent studies. Deals at water parks lure the winter-weary
ABC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Jones clan of Cascade, Iowa, will never mistake the 5-foot swells in the Wilderness Resort's massive indoor wave pool for the Pacific Ocean, but the Midwest oasis of chlorinated fun is proving to be an appealing—and economical—alternative on a chilly winter afternoon. Though the recession has dampened an explosive expansion rate over the past few years, indoor water-park resorts are still making a splash among bargain-conscious, close-to-home vacationers. More

Nothin' in New Orleans (non-fiction)
The Daily Advertiser    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The first time William J. Thibodeaux took a grandchild to a kiddie movie, he was shocked. This fun event with his granddaughter initiated him to what the costs of treating grandchildren are. Movies are expensive, but the circus, skating on ice and the monster truck show are, well, monstrous. What a contrast to the days that when he grew up in the 1940s and 1950s in New Orleans. There were so many things to do for kids, many of them not costing a single penny, and they took advantage of these activities independently of their parents who needed not go along or even drive them.
