The city of Danbury, Conn., is trying to better the situation. It has formed a new organization called the Coalition for Healthy Kids, which tries to bring together every element in the community that this epidemic touches -- city schools, Danbury Hospital, the area public health departments, the Regional YMCA, area businesses, the United Way of Western Connecticut, and the city of Danbury Parks and Recreation Department. A study by University of Utah assistant professor Shaunna Burbidge supports the Utah Department of Health's contention that too many Utah neighborhoods are developed in ways that discourage physical activity. And according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released a report this year correlating obesity with neighborhood designs, poor community planning contributes to expanding waistlines. Streets without bike lanes, neighborhoods without sidewalks and communities without convenient parks and recreational facilities are the municipal planning equivalent of a dozen donuts, the CDC says. These ill-advised designs encourage driving and discourage exercise, and as such, are a breeding ground for obesity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced last week the results of a scoping study of the health risks from inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with synthetic turf and crumb rubber. It concluded that "concentrations of components monitored in this study were below levels of concern." The study further validates the statements of safety by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other governmental agencies, including the New York State Dept of Environmental Conservation and Dept of Health, the New York City Dept of Health, and the California EPA in recent studies.
