Sheriff donates bulletproof vests and other equipment to Mexican police
Los Angeles Times Share
Los Angeles County supervisors approved the donation of hundreds of surplus bulletproof vests, helmets, batons and other
supplies to Mexican police agencies. "This equipment will be used to outfit the poorly equipped Mexican agencies," Sheriff Lee Baca said in a letter to the supervisors, referring to the drug wars plaguing the country. "Currently, many Mexican agencies lack the necessary safety equipment to fulfill their mission." More

The Biometric Technology System scans your iris and immediately identifies who you are if you're in a database, and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in Texas is the first sheriff's department in the country to get the device. "There are no two irises that are the same in this world, and so that's the technology we want," said El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles. The Biometric Technology System will be used throughout the El Paso County jail system.

Use of Twitter, Facebook
rising among gang members
The Associated Press via The Washington Post

When a gang member was released from jail soon after his arrest for selling methamphetamine, friends and associates assumed he had cut a deal with authorities and become a police informant. They sent a warning on Twitter that went like this:
We have a snitch in our midst. Unbeknownst to them, that tweet and the traffic it generated were being closely followed by investigators. Officials sat back and watched as others joined the conversation and left behind incriminating information. Law enforcement officials say gangs are making greater use of Twitter and Facebook, where they sometimes post information that helps agents identify gang associates and learn more about their organizations.

Protecting against 'lone wolf' at Super Bowl

The vast security operation protecting the Super Bowl and surrounding events ranges from Air Force F-16s patrolling the skies above Miami on game day to a buffer zone extending at least 100 yards out from the stadium. No one without a credential or ticket
can get past that barrier — and everyone is subjected to meticulous screening by law enforcement personnel. Also among the security tools: 100 magnetometers, bomb-sniffing dogs, and devices used to detect chemical or biological threats.

LAPD uses high-tech sleuthing to arrest kidnap suspect
Los Angeles Times
Share

A two-year
manhunt for a kidnapping and molestation suspect has ended with the arrest of a Hollywood man, thanks to some high-tech sleuthing seemingly out of the TV show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." Daniel Merino, 41, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping for sexual assault, and now faces multiple felony charges that could send him to prison for life if convicted, LAPD Deputy Chief Jim McDonnell said. Merino is accused of targeting young girls who were walking alone and enticing them into apartment
buildings where he tried to molest them. The charges stem from four separate incidents involving girls in L.A.'s Mid-City area.

Alleged cartel hit man on trial in U.S. border city
The Associated Press via The Washington Post

The cherub-faced 23-year-old
nicknamed "Cheeks" on trial in this Texas-Mexico border city was a midlevel thug working for drug cartel hit squads, authorities say, but the rare public airing of charges has offered a glimpse into the Mexican Gulf Cartel's U.S. operations. While authorities have indicted dozens of alleged cartel operatives along the U.S. border, most cases have ended with plea agreements before any testimony that would offer details or confirm suspicions about the cross-border operations that have turned
U.S.-Mexico border communities into drug battlegrounds.
