High-tech eye scans focus of sheriff's office
Denver Post Share
Fingerprinting a suspect is so last year. Arapahoe County, Colo., Sheriff Grayson Robinson unveiled new technology that will allow officials to scan an arrestee's iris and within seconds get all the pertinent information about the person. The biometric technology is being provided by a $10,000
grant from the National Sheriffs' Association. Arapahoe County is the first law enforcement agency in Colorado to receive the new iris scanner. More
Sheriffs cutting back on patrols
The Columbus Dispatch
Share

Some Ohio sheriffs are dealing with tight budgets by scaling back random crime patrols designed to spot trouble before it begins. Pared-down road forces are too busy handling day-to-day crimes and emergencies to routinely cruise through every community,
the sheriffs say. Sheriffs hesitate to publicize that they are limiting road patrols because they don't want to give lawbreakers an edge, but more routine patrols are being cut statewide as budgets shrink. Many sheriffs have laid off employees or ordered unpaid furloughs to save money.

California law to free inmates early draws protests
The Washington Post
Share

A law that took effect last month
that was intended to reduce inmate overcrowding by allowing early releases at state prisons and county jails is sowing confusion throughout California. Lawmakers of both parties have called for repealing and modifying parts of the law, a county deputies' union has filed a lawsuit asking a judge to block it and a loophole was exposed after an inmate with a violent past was arrested for attempted rape just hours after his release.

Chicago Police lieutenants and captains would face random alcohol testing at any
time, mandatory drug and alcohol testing whenever they fire their weapons and be prohibited from drinking four hours before duty, under contracts ratified by a joint City Council committee. Marijuana bust may be state's biggest ever
The Morning Call
Share

The delivery of more than three tons of
marijuana went up in smoke in what police are saying could be the largest pot bust in Pennsylvania history following a traffic stop on Interstate 81 east of Harrisburg. That's 6,500 pounds, or roughly the combined weight of two Honda Accords. It's enough to fill more than 800,000 eighth-of-an-ounce bags, a common size for street-level purchases. Police estimate the confiscated dope would have fetched between $10 million and $25 million on the street.

Cops attack homegrown gang in California heartland
The Associated Press via The Washington Post

This is Bulldog Country, or so the bumper stickers say. But whether that identifies the home of scrappy Fresno State athletics or the deadly turf of a criminal enterprise labeled the most entrenched
gang in America depends on the success of a police surge now entering its fourth year. Its goal: To take away the Bulldog gang's homefield advantage in California's agricultural heartland, to break its embrace of a new generation.
