Sacramento County sheriff halts early jail releases

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department announced that it has stopped allowing inmates to get out of jail early for good behavior. Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said the decision came in response to a judge's finding earlier that a government code section on the books since 1976 that allows local jurisdictions to grants the "good-time" credits "does not apply to County Jail inmates." More



Sheriff's deputies rescue kidnapped woman

Sheriff's deputies rescued a woman who had been kidnapped, then beaten and raped for three days in a mobile home, authorities said. John Gomez, 58, was arrested on suspicion of various kidnapping, sexual assault and drug charges. He was being held on $2.1 million bail. More

Tyrone Bryant opened the front door of his Glen Burnie home to what he thought was a delivery driver bringing him a Valentine's Day candy gram. After inking his signature, he learned the truth: The driver was Lt. Jennifer Gilbert-Duran with the county Sheriff's Office, and he was under arrest on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a traffic charge. Tennessee sheriff to use new technology to track registered sex offenders

Davidson County, Tenn., Sheriff Daron Hall unveiled new technology that he says will improve the tracking of registered sex offenders. The sheriff's office received a grant for an iris scan machine worth about $10,000 that will be used to check in the sex offenders who come to register at the booking department. The technology can positively identify a person through an eye scan and can even differentiate between twins, the sheriff's office says. More



Judge finds grounds to sanction Arizona sheriff

A federal judge has found grounds for sanctioning an Arizona sheriff's office for its acknowledged destruction of records in a lawsuit that accuses deputies of racially profiling countless Hispanics in immigration patrols. U.S. District Judge Murray Snow held off on imposing the sanctions against the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in the ruling, but indicted he would do so at a later date once related issues were ironed out. When Fort Smith, Ark., police officer Brandon Davis opened the door to a home during a domestic assault call Nov. 11, he faced a man aiming a handgun directly at him. "Put the gun down! Put the gun down!," Davis screamed before fatally shooting Eric Wayne Berry, whose wife, Connie, had called police and said her husband was threatening to kill her. What happened in the confrontation was captured on video in a way some law enforcement officials say could dramatically change police work. More



Deputies seize 18 pounds of cocaine at border checkpoint

About 18 pounds of cocaine were spotted in a checkpoint along 5 freeway in Southern California. The seizure is estimated to have a street value of about $300,000, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies with the San Diego Sheriff's Department were conducting a checkpoint near the San Clemente Border Patrol inspection station, where they spotted the cocaine. The checkpoint was being conducted under a Department of Homeland Security grant, Operation Stonegarden, geared at targeting smugglers along the freeway. More

Mounted police losing in budget battle across the nation

Police on horseback, a tradition that dates to the 1800s in some cities, are increasingly falling victim to budget cuts as cities struggle to maintain basic police services. Mounted police units in cities including San Diego, Portland, Ore., and Clarksville, Tenn., have begun the process of disbanding this year. Units in Boston and Tulsa were eliminated last year. The cuts reflect a trend that has been growing in recent years. More

Plan for early release program in Michigan to face steep opposition

Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm and her administration's Department of Corrections have made the reinstatement of time off for good behavior for Michigan prisoners a key reform measure in the state's budget plan for 2010-11. Under Granholm's proposal, the sentences of about 5,600 prisoners would be recalculated, making them eligible for release within six months. Another 1,900 could be placed in halfway houses, with a combined savings to the prison system of about $130 million in the upcoming fiscal year. More
