Gas Theft More Frequent from Forbes
Dale Fortin is getting a new kind of customer at his Detroit auto repair shop, customers who have not just been in a fender-bender or had a windshield smashed by a rock. The high price of crude oil has turned gas tanks into a cache of valuable booty, and Fortin has replaced several tanks punctured or drilled by thieves thirsting for the fuel inside. Some veteran mechanics and law enforcement officers say it's an unwelcome return of a crime they first saw during the Middle East oil embargo of the early 1970s.

Media Outlets Push for Mug-shot Access from The Roanoke Times Two Roanoke, Va., media outlets have challenged the Roanoke Sheriff's Office policy of not releasing an inmate's photo after the arrested person has bonded out, arguing that the policy violates Virginia law. WSLS and The Roanoke Times have filed a petition in Roanoke Circuit Court asking that a judge mandate that Sheriff Octavia Johnson release mug-shot photos whenever the media ask, regardless of whether the person is physically in jail at the time. Newport News Inmates' Conversations with Visitors to be Monitored from the Daily Press A new phone system at the Newport News, Va., City Jail will be able to record conversations between inmates and visitors speaking through a glass window — a move designed to block inmates from orchestrating crimes from within the jail. The main goal of the new phone bank is to protect witnesses — both inside and outside the jail — who are cooperating with authorities, Sheriff Gabe Morgan said. More
Emergency Preparedness Technology and Planning System to Protect 20 Washington Community Colleges from Security Products The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) announced recently that the statewide Critical Incident Planning and Mapping System (CIPMS) is being expanded to include 20 of the 34 community colleges in the state. The Critical Incident Planning and Mapping System runs on laptop computers and provides first responders with instant access to more than 300 site-specific data points, including emergency response plans, site and floor plans, aerial and geospatial imagery, interior and exterior photos, staging areas, hazardous materials locations, utility shut-offs and evacuation routes for virtually any facility.
