Deputy Thanked for Saving Boy from Burning Car from the El Paso Times Despite the accolades and media attention, El Paso County sheriff's Deputy Juan Muñoz maintains he was just doing his job when he saved a 2-year-old boy from a burning car earlier this month. Muñoz, who received the Sheriff's Office Lifesaving Medal Award during a promotions ceremony last week, said he did what any other deputy would do in the same situation. More

Texas Prison Shakedown Leads to Phones, Weapons from The Associated Press via Fox News A systemwide shakedown of the huge Texas prison system is netting authorities more contraband than just illegal cell phones. Officers have turned up 61 weapons, 52 instances of tobacco products and 14 discoveries of money _ all prohibited for the some 155,000 inmates in the state's 111 prisons. That's on top of the 120 phone and phone components like chargers found as the first full week of the inspections ended Monday. More
Concordia Parish, Miss., Sheriff Starts Sex Offender Registry Web Site from the Natchez Democrat Concordia Parish, Miss., residents now have a way to find out if they have any registered sex offenders living in their neighborhood. Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell recently revealed the Concordia Parish extension of an online registry of sex offenders The Web site allows citizens to enter their home or work address and will then generate a map showing their location relative to the residences of registered sex offenders. Law Enforcement Get Training in Dealing with Mentally Ill from Deseret News Last week, the Salt Lake Police Department conducted one of its Crisis Intervention Team training sessions. Between 25 and 35 law enforcers from jurisdictions across Utah attended the weeklong course to learn correct ways for dealing with people suffering from a mental illness. On Friday, the officers were put through several training scenarios ranging from the odd to the dangerous. All of the scenarios were situations that actually happened, with all but one of the events originally taking place in Salt Lake City. More

Program Helps Inmates Learn to Live in Society from the Tennessean According to Tennessee Department of Correction averages, more than 2,000 women are in prison in any given month. The department says 21 percent of female inmates released from prison are re-arrested – about twice the rate of recidivism of Exodus participants. The Exodus program is a nine-month program that began three years ago as part of an effort to rehabilitate offenders through a therapeutic approach. Since its inception, 96 women have successfully completed the program, which has 39 current enrollees. More
