Sheriff's office will work with Mexican government on unsolved cases

The Santa Cruz County, Calif., Sheriff's Office has a new partnership with the Mexican government that will utilize forensic science in an effort to match names to some of the 40 cases involving unidentified human remains and missing people in the county. The cases date back decades. Using DNA samples from Mexican citizens, investigators hope they can close some of the cases and provide families with answers about their long-lost loved ones, according to Sgt. Dan Campos.

Philadelphia Sheriff's Office now says it will cut overtime spending

Pressured by Nutter administration budget officials, the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office said it was launching a plan to reduce overtime spending. The announcement came a week after the office said cuts would be difficult, as its overtime was largely driven by the court system, which is run by a separate entity. Earlier this week, however, the Sheriff's Office appeared to reverse course, saying it had told all city judges of an overtime-reduction plan that will immediately save $150,000.

Sheriff will polygraph deputies to weed out "liars"

Clayton County, Ga., Sheriff deputies are being asked to take a polygraph test because the Sheriff wants to find out who is talking to the media. Sheriff Kem Kimbrough said he's trying to get to the bottom of a problem at his jail. It stems from an email sent to the media that claims a number of problems at the county's jail. The email contends that the jail has a number of problems, including a water outage, and officer safety "after recent riots at the jail."

Cops: Fugitive falls for employment ruse, is arrested

Posing as a potential employer, Cook County, Ill., sheriff's police persuaded a fugitive wanted in Florida to meet with them and arrested her, authorities said.
Supreme Court: Handgun ban unconstitutional

In some cities plagued by gun violence, the solution was to ban the guns. But that didn't stop the gunfire. Chicago resident Otis McDonald challenged that city's handgun ban, saying he needed to protect himself. "If I see innocent and law-abiding citizens on the streets with guns, I'll be safe," said McDonald. "I'll feel safe because they're not going out there breaking the law."

New Jersey jail uses 'mind reader' technology on inmates

Borrowing a page from a Hollywood sci-fi flick, a jail in New Jersey has been using an Israeli technology to screen detainees to determine whether they intend to commit hostile acts. The computerized system, called Cogito, "emulates the work of an interrogation expert and can accurately expose hostile intents and hidden information in as little as five minutes," Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire wrote in a recent issue of Sheriff magazine.

New technology catching child porn suspects

New technology that hunts for child pornography is helping detectives catch law-breakers faster in Central Florida. Larry Parsley, 73, is in jail after he was charged with 50 counts of child pornography. The Lake County Cyber Crimes Unit served a search warrant at his home and found pornographic pictures and video of children. Investigators knew he had the child porn before they even set foot in his home.

New cop strategies slash Detroit murders

New crime statistics out of Detroit show the homicide rate in the Motor City has declined 27 percent since last summer. The decline, along with a 22 percent drop in non-fatal shootings, follows a national trend, but also reflects well on the city's new police chief, Warren Evans, who took command nearly a year ago.

10-year stalemate persists as suspect avoids police

The past decade has taken a toll on John Joe Gray, holed up on his rural East Texas land while waiting for a siege that's never happened. He's been living on 47 acres behind a fence without running water and electricity but with plenty of guns, daring authorities to arrest him for a 10-year-old, third-degree felony warrant. He says he hasn't left his property since 2000, all the while allowing his distrust of a government he views as evil to fester.

Mysterious ex-con draws comparison to Jason Bourne

Authorities came upon a startling and mysterious scene when they showed up at a luxury apartment in Los Angeles in April while investigating a call about a gas odor. The door was barricaded. A cache of loaded weapons, including an AK-47, sat next to a mosaic depicting the CIA seal. They found equipment for counterfeiting money. High-powered binoculars were trained on the U.S. Federal Reserve building next door. What followed was a six-week hunt for a suspect who had slipped out of the fire escape moments earlier and whose evasiveness drew comparisons to fictional agent Jason Bourne.
