Fermilab has compelling evidence for a possible new particle Discovery News Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Back in April, rumors were flying around the particle physics community about a tiny "bump" spotted in the data from Fermilab's CDF collaboration that seemed to indicate the presence of new particle, possibly even the elusive Higgs boson. The rumored signal was sufficiently weak that most expected it wouldn't hold up under subsequent analysis. But at a recent physics conference in France, CDF member Giovanni Punzi showed the results after more data had been added to the mix, and the signal had strengthened instead of disappearing. More
Gravitational theory reproduces superconducting circuitry American Physical Society Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
For over a decade, theorists have been exploring a surprising mathematical relationship between the equations that describe two seemingly different situations — one involving curved space time, the other involving systems of many interacting particles. In a paper in the June edition of Physical Review Letters, a team uses this connection to mathematically reproduce the operation of a standard superconducting device known as a Josephson junction starting with equations for curved space time. More 26 terabits per second: World record in ultra-rapid data transmission PhysOrg.com Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
German scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have succeeded in encoding data at a rate of 26 terabits per second on a single laser beam, transmitting them over a distance of 50 kilometers, and decoding them successfully. This is the largest data volume ever transported on a laser beam. The process developed by KIT allows the transmission of the contents of 700 DVDs in one second only. More

How to write about your science SciDev.Net Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Scientists are increasingly asked to reach wide audiences, so making science understood and appreciated is a sought-after skill. Writing for the public brings many rewards: it gives a higher profile that impresses funders, garners public support and attracts top-quality collaborations. This guide gives you some of the dos and don'ts of science writing for the general public. More Africa releases first survey of its own science SciDev.Net Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
A major pan-African science, technology and innovation survey, aimed at mapping the state of research to help with policymaking, was released in May. The "Africa Innovation Outlook 2010," prepared by the African Science and Technology Indicators Initiative and launched at its workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, covers 19 countries from across the continent and aims to plug an information gap on the state of science in Africa. European team suggests new way to measure scientific relevance by city PhysOrg.com Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Lutz Bornmann of the Max Planck Society in Munich and Loet Leydesdorff from the University of Amsterdam have produced what they believe is a graphical representation of the relative importance of the science being done in major cities around the world. The two authors relied on data obtained from Scopus (circa 2008) for paper publication data, and used citation data up to the beginning of 2011. They focused exclusively on just three of the sciences; physics, chemistry and psychology. More
Nigeria seeks to establish National Science Foundation SciDev.Net Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The Nigerian federal government recently announced a $5 million grant to the Nigerian Academy of Science to help coordinate work in research institutes and universities, and for capacity building. The academy's president said the money will go towards the $63.7 million needed to set up a National Science Foundation for research and capacity building for young researchers. The African Astronomical Society lays out a few ideas of what it will do for astronomy in Africa. Ideas include advocacy for the MeerKAT/Square Kilometer Array and the Cherenkov Telescope Array, an astronomy decadal survey for Africa and the placement of a planetarium in each African country. More
Rebuilding Mexico's science and technology capacity SciDev.Net Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Despite being one of the richest countries in Latin America, Mexico has made little headway in developing its own science and technology programs in recent years — and now its dependency on imported technology is reaching a critical level. More Picking a postdoc position Inside Higher Ed Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Rice University physics professor, Douglas Natelson, explores the tricky topic of picking a postdoc position given that it is somewhere between choosing a graduate school (lots of good places to go, with guaranteed open positions every year) and getting a faculty job (many fewer open positions per year in a given field, and therefore a much restricted field of play; plus, a critical need to make some hard decisions that could be postponed or avoided in graduate school).
