Mental toughness in youth soccer: Preparing our players better
SoccerNation
As coaches we aim to train our players to be able to develop mastery of soccer's most used skills. When our players are faced with challenges or adversity how they cope and continue to play on may be an important aspect we need to focus on at our practices. Ideally, we want our players to be prepared to deal with a bad call from an official, a physical play from an opponent, or a missed opportunity in front of the goal.

But are football clubs missing a trick in overlooking dedicated training for the most important organ of all — the brain? The importance of coaching the right system
SoccerNation
Wayne Harrison writes, "When I joined San Diego Surf SC, I knew that this was a club with a reputation and history of success, and there was the great potential to build on that. Teaching mental toughness
Soccer Classroom
Many of us know what mental toughness is but how do you teach it? It's a term that comes up often in coaching but one that is rarely taught how to use. Mental toughness is the ability to continue to play with the same tenacity after making a mistake or when things don't go the right way. You see it all the time when someone makes a mistake, their hands immediately cover their face in embarrassment and shock. This often occurs after missing an open net, miss clearing a ball which results in giving up a goal or when missing a penalty.

Refs: In the right spot, at the right time
SoccerAmerica
Randy Vogt writes, "I have seen many soccer games when the referee made an important call — sometimes correctly, sometimes incorrectly — and loud dissent followed since the ref was 40 yards away from the play. Just as with phones, long-distance calling can be very expensive. The preventive officiating technique is to be fit enough and to hustle each game so that you are close to the play. Should the ref blow the whistle far from the foul, the ref needs to continue running toward the foul so it could look like he or she is closer to the foul than when the whistle was blown."
