Sport psychology consultant and President of X-Factor Performance Consulting, Dr. Tiffany Jones is confirmed to present at the 2014 NSCAA Summer Symposium. The second annual Summer Symposium is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 3 in Orlando, Florida. Jones is scheduled to not only hold a lecture, but run a field session and join some of the other world-class presenters for an exciting panel discussion on Friday.

Goalkeeping guru Tony DiCicco to present at Summer Symposium

No matter how you look at it, Tony DiCicco is a legend and he's bringing his coaching talents to Orlando, Florida, later this summer as a presenter at the 2014 NSCAA Summer Symposium. He's scheduled to present two field sessions (topics to be announced): Friday, Aug. 1 at 3:15 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 2 at 9:15 a.m. DiCicco will also participate in the "It's All in Your Head — A Mental Skills Discussion" as a panelist that Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Follow the moments from the 2014 US Youth Soccer Regional Championships
US Youth Soccer
The 2014 US Youth Soccer Regional Championships are underway in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and will kick off later this week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Beavercreek, Ohio. The field of 10,000 teams has been pared down to just over 900 with the ultimate goal of advancing to the field of 96 for the US Youth Soccer National Championships held July 21-27 at the Germantown SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland.

World Cup referees get high-tech help watching the goal line

It's not clear that smartwatches will ever make the leap from the tech hype cycle to the real world, but the devices will get at least one highly visible cameo on a particularly big stage. Referees at the World Cup this year will wear watches that will vibrate and display the word "GOAL" each time a ball crosses the goal line.

Pennsylvania school bans soccer headers
The Gazette
Recently, The Shipley School in Pennsylvania instituted a "no heading" policy that prohibits middle school players (sixth through eighth grade) from heading full-size balls during practices and discourages them from heading in games. Though Shipley's stance is a unique one, the Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, private school may soon be followed by other schools and youth teams across the country, according to Chris Nowinski, a concussion activist and co-director of Boston University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy.

Why being short can help in soccer

There are several reasons for the rise of soccer's little big stars, but the main one is that being close to the ground is a major advantage for midfielders and forwards. Shorter people have a "quicker stepping pattern," Stasinos Stavrianeas, a professor of exercise science at Willamette University, said. Essentially, they're spry: They can change directions much faster than tall folks and they have better control over their limbs.
