Antioxidant supplements: Do they improve athletic performance?

There is a lot of discussion in the sports community about antioxidants and whether or not they improve athletic performance. Antioxidants, whether they come from natural foods or supplements, are thought to protect cells from oxidative stress and oxidative damage. Oxidative stress is a biological process caused by a variety of conditions including exposure to environmental conditions, like smoking and other environmental toxins. Chronic oxidative stress has been linked to an array of disorders ranging from muscle soreness to many cancers. As a result, antioxidants are now advertised as preventative medicine for all sorts of illnesses and ailments, including aging, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

When strategy gets in the way of player development

Dr. Dina Gentile has successfully coached soccer at the Division II and III collegiate levels, select youth soccer teams, and a variety of town programs. Gentile writes: In our final game of the season, I was prepared for the tough competition and the general intensity stemming from the energy of the last game. What surprised me the most was how the opposing coach stressed strategy over development by controlling decision making throughout the U10 game.

2014 NPL National Showcase welcomes college coaches' recruiting efforts
U.S. Club Soccer
US Club Soccer's 2014 National Premier Leagues Showcase in suburban Las Vegas will provide an excellent opportunity to scout top talent from around the country in one location. In its inaugural stage, the interleague event features top U-16, U-17 and U-18 boys teams and players from across the country. Clubs play one game per day for a total of three games each.

ODP girls Thanksgiving Interregional commences in Florida

The annual U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Girls Thanksgiving Interregional commenced in Boca Raton, Fla. with the 1998 and 1999 age groups starting the action. The six-day tournament, which will take place Nov. 24-29 at Spanish River Athletic Park, will feature elite girls teams in the 1996-1999 age groups from each of the four U.S. Youth Soccer regions.

Albion SC Technical Director Noah Gins on 2013-2014 US Youth Soccer National League

Albion Soccer Club Technical Director Noah Gins and College Guidance Director Noah Kooiman took Albion BU15 and BU17 teams to compete in the U.S. Youth Soccer 2013-2014 National League. Kick off was Nov. 21, when 80 U14 through U18 boys teams from all across the U.S.A. met in Wilson, N.C., and began the season.

USA boss Klinsmann part of Tottenham contingency plan

Reports suggest that Tottenham may target Juergen Klinsmann if Andre Villas-Boas doesn't achieve success at White Hart Lane. Major League Soccer reveals 2014 schedule, with a break for World Cup in Brazil
MLS Soccer
MLS released the schedule for the 2014 season. It's the earliest the schedule has ever been made available and contained some interesting information, especially in regards to the international schedule. The season kicks off with the Seattle Sounders hosting Sporting Kansas City on March 8 and will include a two-week break for the World Cup.

The truth about Thanksgiving calories

Chances are you're going to eat a lot of calories at your Thanksgiving dinner. The Mayo Clinic suggests the average person mows down about 4,000. The American Council on Exercise says we gorge ourselves to the tune of 3,000. Let's put that in perspective. If you're used to eating approximately 2,000 calories per day, you're going to need to load a lot of food on your plate to hit that 3,000-calorie mark (and that's on the low end).
