U.S. soccer names Cheryl Bailey head of new women's league

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati has announced that Cheryl Bailey has been named the Executive Director for the new U.S. Soccer-led women's soccer league that will begin play in the spring of 2013. Bailey served as General Manager of the U.S. Women's National Team for five years from 2007 through 2011. A long-time athletics administrator who led the support staff for the U.S. team during the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cups and the 2008 Olympics, she was in charge of all areas of Women's National Team administration including team travel, payroll, liaising with clubs, and working with FIFA, CONCACAF and other Federations. More

Applications are now available for all National Cup XII Regionals, which are open to all member teams in the U-11 through U-18/19 boys and girls age groups. National Cup XII Regionals will be held in six cities across the country between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July in 2013 with winning teams from National Cup XII Regionals and qualifying state cups in the U-13 through U-17 age groups advancing to the National Cup XII Finals, slated for July 18-21 at Aurora Sports Park in suburban Denver. Anson Dorrance has coached at North Carolina for all of the Tar Heels' 21 NCAA women's soccer championships, and he appreciates each title more and more. A rare No. 2 seed and 13th ranked in the nation when the tournament began, North Carolina scored three goals in the second half to beat Penn State 4-1 for its latest championship. The Tar Heels (15-5-3), making their 26th appearance in the final four College Cup, won for the first time since 2009. More

New California law targets brain injuries in high school sports

Many school districts across California have long required high school coaching staffs to be educated about the dangers of concussions and brain injuries, but in August Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that requires all high school coaches to complete concussion awareness training every two years. The on-line class is hosted on the California Interscholastic Federation website. More

The Earthquakes' Frank Yallop won Major League Soccer's coach of the year award after directing San Jose to the Supporters' Shield title this season. Yallop, who won the award one other time in his 10-year career, received 65 percent of the vote, well ahead of second-place Peter Vermes of Sporting Kansas City. Yallop hopes to have all of the main players from the record-setting club back next season, including English striker Simon Dawkins. More
