Moving anatomic pathology closer to patient yields benefits, opportunities for professionals
ADVANCE for Medical Laboratory Professionals Share
Laboratory medicine is constantly evolving. Recently, anatomic pathology laboratories have been installed in the offices of specialty practice physician groups. While some controversy exists surrounding this trend, movement of labs closer to the patient yields benefits for the patient and opportunities for technologists, histologists and pathologists. More
Health of pathology laboratory technicians at risk from common solvents

Researchers determined that medical laboratory technicians who handle common solvents develop auto-immune connective tissue diseases in increased numbers. The new study was published in the Journal of Rheumatology. It offers credible evidence that clinical laboratory technicians, pathologists, and scientists who work with toluene and xylene double their chances of
developing a vascular condition known as Raynaud's phenomenon.

New eosinophilic esophagitis guidelines update diagnosis, therapy
Internal Medicine News
Share

New clinical guidelines for eosinophilic esophagitis characterize the disorder as a chronic, immune- and antigen-mediated disease. The updated consensus recommendations, which constitute the first update since 2007, also suggest that eosinophilic esophagitis is truly on the rise in both adults and children, although no one really knows why. The guidelines also suggest that the disease may have a genetic underpinning — an
abnormality in chromosome 5.

Sanyo has expanded its offering of dual-cooling -86C freezers with the MDF-U700VX, an upright 728-litre model that is said to provide maximum sample security for research and clinical samples. Sanyo
said that with two independent refrigeration systems, its dual-cooling freezers maintain a reliable and uniform -86C ultra-low temperature environment; if one cooling system suffers an unexpected failure, the other circuit will keep samples safe until service can be arranged.

Enhanced immunohistochemical resolution of claudin proteins in glycolmethacrylate-embedded tissue biopsies
PubMed

There are a number of disadvantages with conventional tissue immunohistochemistry for accurate localization of claudin proteins. The use of glycolmethacrylate tissue embedding with fixation in acetone is compatible with epitope preservation for many antibody reagents that are often destroyed by chemical cross-linking fixatives.

ERG oncoprotein overexpression in prostate cancer
Medical Laboratory Observer
Share

The high prevalence of gene fusions involving the ERG gene and the specificity of ERG oncoprotein overexpression for prostate cancer has led to a body of research on clinical applications for diagnosis and treatment. Research suggests that the ERG oncoprotein overexpression has oncogenic functions in prostate cancer, increasing tumor cell invasion, abrogating prostate cell differentiation and acting as a surrogate marker of androgen
receptor signaling defects.

A new study has found that most patients undergoing biopsy of the small intestine do not have the recommended four samples to diagnose celiac disease. The study, published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, analyzed a national database of biopsy specimens. More than 100,000 patients had a biopsy of the small intestine, but only 35 percent of them had at least four samples taken.

Scientists claim to have identified markers that enable the segregation of rare, truly pluripotent human hematopoietic stem cells from multipotent progenitors. They identified CD49f as a specific marker
for pluripotent HSCs, enabling their isolation using flow cytometry. The team at the Campbell Family Institute for Cancer Research/Ontario Cancer Institute tracked the expression of a number of adhesion molecules in HSC-enriched subsets.

Novel multi-color immunofluorescence technique using primary antibodies raised in the same host species
SoluLink via BioCompare

In order to avoid cross-reactivity of secondary antibodies with unwanted primary antibodies when doing either dual- or triple-labeling immunofluorescence it is necessary to use primary antibodies raised in different host species. In this clinical report, the authors describe their technique for triple-labeling immunofluorescence that can be used with primary antibodies derived from a single host source.
