The updated consensus recommendations, which constitute the first update since 2007, also suggest that eosinophilic esophagitis is truly on the rise in both adults and children, although no one really knows why. the important topics at an upcoming meeting in Baltimore. The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will conduct the meeting at its headquarters and is asking for public comment as it develops coverage guidelines and reimbursement levels for the 2012 laboratory test fee schedule.

A new study has found that most patients undergoing biopsy of the small intestine do not have the recommended four samples to diagnose celiac disease. The study, published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, analyzed a national database of biopsy specimens. More than 100,000 patients had a biopsy of the small intestine, but only 35 percent of them had at least four samples taken.
