C-SPAN's The Communicators features LightSquared debate

C-SPAN's The Communicators has focused on LightSquared, with interviews with Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., of the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee; Jim Kirkland, founding member of the Coalition to Save our GPS; and Fred Schulte, senior reporter of iWatch News. A video clip of the show is available on C-SPAN's website here.
On The Communicators, this was the second part of a look at LightSquared, a company building a national wireless broadband network. Rep. Broun and Kirkland are critical of LightSquared's goals and business practices. Also joining the discussion was Fred Schulte, senior reporter for iwatch news, who has followed the LightSquared story and reported on email exchanges
between the White House and company officials.
In Part 1 of this series, LightSquared's CEO, Sanjiv Ahuja, was on the program defending his business and his network, which might interfere with GPS global positioning equipment, including some used by the military.
The Communicators airs Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET on C-SPAN and Monday at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET on C-SPAN2.

JAVAD GNSS announced an offer via its website to "to make GNSS receivers made by other manufacturers LightSquared Compatible, too," at a cost depending on receiver age and model, and on a case-by-case
basis. The company had previously stated that it has taken its own flagship receivers and reconfigured the filters and linear amplifiers to make them completely compatible with LightSquared's bottom 10 MHz of spectrum.

Last year at INTERGEO, FARO rocked the scanning world with its debut of the low-cost Focus3D; Gatewing gave everyone a new perspective on the future of photogrammetry with its launch of the X100 UAV;
and Leica Geosystems drew nods of approval for its introduction of the Leica Viva TS15 Robotic Imaging Total Station. It would have been difficult to top these advances a mere 12 months later. Still exhibitors at INTERGEO 2011 in Nuremburg gave it their best shot.

Construction unemployment rate edges down to 13.3 percent

Despite a stagnant national unemployment rate, the construction industry added 26,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate improved to 13.3 percent for
the month, according to the Department of Labor's Oct. 7 jobs report. The unemployment rate is down from 13.5 percent in August, and much improved from 17.2 percent the same time last year.

The 17th annual Salina Seminar Series will be held Jan. 12-14 at Webster Conference Center in Salina, Kan. The 2012 seminar will feature guest speaker Gary Kent, LS, who is the chair of the NSPS committee on the ALTA/ACSM standards and the NSPS liaison with the American Land Title Association.
Gary's topics at the Seminar will be "Easements and Rights of Way" and "Preparing a Surveyor’s Report." The Seminar offers
surveyors the opportunity to earn up to 16 professional development hours, including Minimum Standards. A variety of topics will be covered, including Center of Sections, GPS, Traffic Control, RLS Prep, Math and Survey Administration.
This year, the seminar has been approved to offer up to 14 continuing education credits to floodplain managers. Courses offered for CEC credit include Elevation Certificates and LOMA. An "Early Bird" special is available until Dec. 19, so register now. A
